Hi,

Do all new shape Rav4s get the apple car play or android auto update to the infotainment system?

It seems like in 2020 the new models got updates, but does this mean that the ones released in 2019 will also get the update? I've tried asking Toyota dealers but haven't gotten an answer

Hi all,

I am from Australia, and have just picked up my new RAV4 Cruiser yesterday. It was built in August this year and still doesn't have Android Auto.

Local Toyota has publicly announced that all RAV4s manufactured in the last quarter of 2019 will have Android Auto, and every RAV4 purchased in 2019 will be eligible for the free upgrade to Android Auto.

Here is the link to Toyota website saying that: www.toyota.com.au/the-latest/tune-in-with-apple-carplay-and-android-auto

The dealer who sold me the car said that they are expecting the upgrade to become available in November 2019.

If you purchased a new Toyota in 2019 you may be eligible for a little software update. Today has today announced the rollout of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on six models with retro-fitting available on many.

The Rav4, HiAce, Granvia, Camry, Corolla Hatch and Prius are all getting both smartphone systems compatibility.

On all those models purchased from now on, CarPlay and Android Auto will be standard.

If you purchased a 2019 model before today there’s a decent chance you can take your car in for a retro-fitting and drive out with your Smartphone connected on the infotainment screen.

Toyota’s Sean Hanley says both systems offer app access safely “By offering Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility in our vehicles, we are continuing to refine our market offerings and provide our customers with the products and services that enhance their lives,”

“The technology will allow our customers to stay informed, entertained and in touch with the wider world from behind the wheel, directly through the vehicles’ upgraded multimedia systems,”
he said.

Latest-model HiAce and Rav4 owners can upgrade free of charge.

If you’ve bought the latest-gen Camry, Corolla hatch and Prius you can get CarPlay and Android Auto for a $199 fee at your Toyota Dealer.

The new infotainment system with CarPlay and Android Auto will also be standard on the new Corolla sedan and C-HR due out later this year.

Long overdue, and great news.

The Toyota dealer said that’s only available overseas and not in South Africa. He said the only option is to install an after market system which seems crazy

have you managed to get Toyota to update the system for you?

As per Toyota SA website.

So all new vehicles have the update. The new generation at launch didn’t come with it.

my question is how to get Toyota to do the upgrade because the hardware is the same

Have you managed to get it right? It seems the SA dealers say it can't be done
Not tried it no, but the files can be downloaded from an official Toyota source as per that post. There are rumours that in some markets the microphone is replaced by the dealers, although those who do the upgrade themselves post that it works fine without it

Anyone did this to their pre-Carplay/Android Auto Toyota? I want to try this on my wife's 2019 Rav; Toyota wants close to R30k to do this.

R30k for a software upgrade? Wtf?
Oh no no it's not just that. It's a radio upgrade this, hardware swap that, etc etc. The usual baffle-with-BS narrative.

The cost doesn't surprise me. Car dealers exploit the fact that South Africans don't value their Rands and don't want to be seen as stingy/poor.

Regardless, I want to try this but it would be nice if someone on here has successfully attempted this and can offer some pointers.

The Toyotaownersclub thread above has posts of people paying ÂŁ50/ÂŁ150 to get it done by the dealers in the end.

I'm in the same boat, problem is that the models sold in the first year 2019 need a hardware upgrade to enable them to get the software to run Android Auto and Apple Carplay. From 2020 it should only be a software thing.

Hi all, just jumping on this thread because I am so frustrated and can't find anything online about it. My 2024 Rav 4 connects wirelessly to Apple Carplay but I have to plug in for Android Auto. This just doesn't seem right, my dealer also says I have to add an after market adapter if I want wireless Android Auto. This just seems crazy!
