I'm not talking about how you see these vehicles but how they are classified.

Types of SUVs
the classes and the classification of cars within it remains very subjective however

from that link Honda HR-V is "sub-compact" while Kia Sportage is "compact"

Honda HR-V:
Length: 179.8 inches
Height: 63.4 inches
Width: 72.4 inches

Kia Sportage:
Length 183.5 inches (only 3.7 more)
Height 65.4 inches (only 2 more)
Width 73.4 inches (only 1 more)

the difference in total volume they occupy is less than 2 standard building bricks ... yet they are entirely different classes?

i.e. it is subjective, there's no actual standard, Mazda for example uses the term crossover and SUV interchangeably and they use terms like "small", "mid", "large" instead of "compact", "mid", "full"

It's all based on the size of the chassis and the size of the car that the chassis was repurposed from. The Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage are, in this case, the comparable compact SUVs.

My wife test drove a blue HR-V today. She said it is fugly. I'm absolutely gobsmacked. She also said "It's not nippy" guess we can scratch that one off the list.
The sales rep convinced her to test drive a citroen when I asked which one she said "a white one"
I should be present with these things.
I asked her to send a photo when she test drives the citroen.
I pray to thee Lord that she hates it.
What your wife needs is a VW Taigo or if she wants more oomph she can get a T-Roc 1.4tsi or even the 2.0tsi.

I'll never own a VW again.
My wife got stranded alongside the road at dunoon with a vw polo 1.0 tsi with little over 10 000km on the clock. Something went wrong and the engine check light came on. Car went in for repairs under warranty and took darn near 7 weeks before we got it back. The service we received was crap and had to constantly phone to get a status update on the vehicle repairs.

You not special sir. I had the same experience at ford, vw. All dealerships suck. My ST needed a gearbox replacement at 12 000kms and an engine replacement at 60 000kms. changing brands wont fix this necessarily

I quite like the look of the hr-v, but why don't you look at the Opel Mokka? I bet your wife will like it

I drove my nissan livina until it reached 200k kms on the clock. It gave no issues.

Like they say....

You can with nissan.
Third biggest mistake I made in life was selling it.
Fair enough. And it has an MR engine by nissan. I also have an MR engine and its bulletproof. my toyota i sold at 300 000kms. Unfortunately most modern boosted engines has their potential issues

Just get her a Fortuner and call it a day. It will match her driving style.

Love a fortuner. I really want one. its still a bakkie though, so driving sophistication will be lacking. Though you will probably get better resale and it wont let you down.

Lovely vehicles, and now she wont have to slow down to speed humps anymore. Perfect car if you want to release some tension.

if she found the ~118kw Honda HR-V to be "not nippy" then the ~110kw Qashqai is unlikely to fair better, both with CVT transmission as well
Turbo vs N/A…

That 1.3 Turbo does alright. Had an 88kw Renault Captur and it was nippy enough. The 88kw Clio I had before felt proper fast.

Oh yes. Go look at the Captur. Best car I owned, hands down… or the Arkana!
