PS5

With the PS4 I bought one just before the PS4 pro was released.
Now I want to buy a PS5. What's the feeling out there?
Will we even get a PS5 pro? The PS4 pro was to enable 4K gaming on the relatively large 4K TV install base. We don't have that "problem" this time around.

With the PS5 and XSX already pretty powerful, will we see the same scenario where some games tend to run like crap on the base console?

Word is there is not going to be a PS5 Pro, but the new PS5 design will be revealed sometime in April. Going forward, there won't be a digital version or a disk version, there will just be the one design with an optional swappable disk drive, you will be able to buy the disk drive separately if you so choose to.

So because the implementation of Dolby Digital over ARC has such a massive delay I’ve been running my PS5 in LPCM (Stereo) for ages now because it wasn’t worth getting up to swop the cables and when I really want to get into it I use the headset anyway.

Then I was fiddling today and figured hold on if I switch the Receiver/Amplifier mode off and just set it to TV then it enables the Sony spatial audio feature so let’s have a go.

I mean it’s nothing like Dolby Atmos don’t get me wrong, but it sure as hell beats normal stereo.

I even went so far as to switch to normal TV audio for a little while to try it out and fidelity is obviously lacking (even with the pretty good standard speakers on my OLED) but the spatial experience is pretty damn good and I would imagine a very welcome change for people not running Hifi audio with their consoles.

Certainly something Microsoft could implement on the Xbox with Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos for normal stereo pair speaker setups.

Sony Announces PlayStation State of Play Event for This Week

Sony has announced that a PlayStation State of Play event will take place on February 23 and share new details on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and more.

Announced in a tweet (below), the event will take place at 1pm Pacific / 4pm Eastern / 9pm UK (so 7am AEST on February 24) and can be viewed on PlayStation's YouTube and Twitch channels.

Though it didn't say exactly what it would be showing, Sony has confirmed that five brand new PlayStation VR 2 games will be shown off at the State of Play alongside indie and third party reveals.

State of Play is back! Tune in Thursday at 1pm PT for:
☑️ Five new PS VR2 titles from partners
☑️ Hot indie and third-party reveals
☑️ An extended look at Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguehttps://t.co/kMPyPpMhSk pic.twitter.com/mu8RX0ZJFk
— PlayStation (@PlayStation) February 21, 2023
The main attraction will perhaps be a 15 minute gameplay showcase from Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League though, which will share new game mechanics and updates on Rocksteady Studios' latest.

Having stepped away somewhat from the likes of E3 and some other big gaming conferences, Sony has reserved a lot of its big announcements for State of Play events like this one.

The last one took place in September and saw Tekken 8 officially revealed, a new trailer shared for God of War: Ragnarok, Like a Dragon: Ishin revealed for the west, and much more.

Xbox Series X|S Is Getting Trounced by PS5, Microsoft Weirdly Reveals

The solution? $69 billion. The funniest thing about the never-ending Activision Blizzard acquisition saga is how it’s prompted tech giants Microsoft and Sony to undermine their own businesses. Case in point: during a media briefing in Brussels earlier today, the Redmond firm proudly (?) declared that Xbox has a global market share of just 30 per cent compared to PlayStation’s vastly superior 70 per cent. Nintendo, apparently, doesn’t exist. Microsoft didn’t stop there with the cold hard numbers: it said in Europe the split is 80/20 in Sony’s favour, and it added that PS5 outsold Xbox Series X|S by a ratio of 69/31 towards the tail end of last year. Given how unbelievably aggressive the Japanese giant has been with its marketing in 2023 thus far, we can only imagine that gap is continuing to increase.

Microsoft Accuses Sony of Protecting ‘Two-Decade Dominance’ in Market Share

Brad Smith, President and Vice Chair of Microsoft, has said in an interview that Activision Blizzard has accused Sony for trying to “protect its two-decade dominance in video games.” Smith also claims that PlayStation has a “70/30” market share compared to Xbox on a global scale, and that these figures are even stronger for Sony in Europe and Japan.

These remarks were made during a conference to the media in defense of the Microsoft-Activision merger before the company had to convince EU regulators to approve the acquisition.

Microsoft believes Call of Duty being on Nvidia and Switch will satisfy regulators

Smith suggests that the Microsoft-Activision deal would actually increase competition given Sony’s market share in gaming, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz:
Think about the market in Europe. It is a market where Sony has an 80% share. Globally, it is about 70/30. In Japan, it is 96/4. These numbers have been remarkably steady for two decades. Even last year, when there were issues with Sony’s supply chain, they came back strong.
This statement goes against the testimony of three third-party companies that said the Microsoft Activision deal would have a “negative impact” on competition.

Smith also says the deal to bring Call of Duty, along with Xbox games, to Nintendo Switch and Nvidia’s GeForce Now will open the series “to 150 million more people who don’t get it today.”

While Microsoft and Sony have not agreed to a resolution yet, Smith said he had an envelope in his pocket with a possible deal that Sony will accept. We have had no word yet if Sony has seen or accepted this supposed deal.

MS are clearly extremely desperate to get this deal through.
