Big trouble ahead for domestic workers in South Africa

I disagree. In the legal framework of SA it is creating jobs for people. There is a going rate and that’s regulated. If one advertises a position and someone is willing to do it, then so be it.

This is all about perspective. I feel hard done by since my yacht is only a small one. I have to fly business class when others fly first. Am I a slave too?
no just lazy, creating jobs with slave wages, just expand the unemployment percentile. nothing to it

Gotta love people speaking from a position of privilege on behalf of others. It reminds of this...

R24,813 a month...

and rising, albeit slowly.

TBH spending R1k a week paying others to do the jobs I really don't want to do is a worthwhile expense to me.
Fair enough. However, 15K take home. And this is getting less and less (what people are able to spend). The increase in incomes is mostly below inflation and in reality things are a lot bleaker than what statistics reflect. Point is a majority of the working-class struggle to afford a domestic, and it is getting worse. Debt is also getting worse.

Well that’s your opinion. The adulting part, the economics, needs to be balanced in order for these positions to be available.

quite right, there's no need to justify your zen state by providing a pittance to a poor, balanced by laziness. "shem here's some shoes and pocket money" now get busy before the whip cracks, at least the disastrous state of this nation ensures there are many replacements if your poor stops performing, replace and repeat.
balance in motion right eh?

All domestic workers are in trouble as our esteemed government continually uses the stick, instead of the carrot, as impetus for anyone to hire domestic help.

Sure, no one really NEEDS domestic help and it is a luxury but given SA's situation regarding available labor, it would be moronic to not consider domestic employment.

SA's problem is that our government would rather feed at the trough than provide the tax paying populace the means to put money back in their pocket, or at the least, put more money in the pocket of domestic employees instead of in the pockets of the ANC piggies!

Simplest way in which to up the domestic employment numbers is to create a tax benefit, which scales based on how much you pay your employees, and which scales based on the regulatory boxes you tick as part of the employment. It's almost like the government forgets that we use net-tax income to pay salaries/wages and the minimum wage regulations will crowd out employment, rather than protect it!

how would i even do that? i dont turn signaling, where's the lever for virtue. in most of the world a domestic isn't a thing, only here in scummy south africa, it's made a generational thing. if you're such a hard working bunch (as many tend to incorrectly believe) why are you unable to clean up after yourselves?
I personally won't consider myself "very" hard working but I do all chores myself (family of 3) and we have no Nanny/domestic since covid lockdown started. Till our son was born, we hardly ever used domestic as we just got used to house work.

We are thinking of getting domestic twice a week now that I have cut down on some other fixed expenses but that doesn't make me lazy as I am just changing my stance as per situation.

There are shades of grey in most situations. It is not a binary world.

You beat me to it :)

Same here - I now place more value on my time with my family, than I do in spending time cleaning over the weekends or doing the 'monotonous' chores in the garden.

When I as a 20 something got opportunity to work full time for R20/h in 2007. Would have LOVED to have some ******** to come and tell my then employer to get fooked. I should instead remain unemployed.

Sitting around doing Nothing is better than a lil something in la la land dream land apparently.

got it, lazy and filthy, takes ages to clean your own mess. teaching your kids manual labour is for the poor and not worth your time, no sense of pride. The bestest yet, look job creation! i'm so much good wow

if the shoe fits.
for the record offense is taken not given, in that little ejaculate of understanding you may realize that it is your decision to take offense if someone is being / acting / speaking offensively. the power is in not the hands of the offender, but i understand people are butthurt sad and overly sensitive, so woke

Why did that offend trigger you so much?
Do you see the irony here?

B.t.w. we do not have a horse domestic in this race at all, but we do wear shoes that fit, it is just more comfortable.

i'm a cnt i dont take offense, i give it - you decide if you want it or not ;)
i refuse to invite/employ some janky person to clean up behind me. it's not a question of being comfortable or not, there's some pride involved.
i saffas just like to keep up appearances, by outsourcing it.

Al I got from your post was: I'm not lazy and I don't pay slave wages.

Agreed. A far superior answer to having a job. It's perfectly sustainable.
it solves the problem for all parties involved
- your tax money is spent on feeding the poor
- your house is clean, cos you're not lazy
- the poor votes back into power their blesser
