I participated in a 6 hour weapon retention seminar yesterday at my jiujitsu gym and I learnt a bunch. A lot of realities were also made very clear.
The seminar was focused on ways to keep your weapon if someone is trying to take it away from you or trying to hold or grapple with you, all stand-up focused for this one including using things like a wall to your advantage. Next one we will be working more on the ground.
Another aspect of the seminar was practically using a personal tourniquet while in a stressed environment. At the beginning we were taught on the operation of a tourniquet and kept one on our persons throughout the seminar. At any given time, the instructor would shout a random limb where you've been "shot". You must then immediately apply the tourniquet within 30 seconds while also finding cover from the instructor's laser pen.
Some personal takeaways;
- Guys wearing anything other than appendix carry all had a disadvantage at some point.
- Every person after the seminar was convinced about 'one in the chamber'. There were no moments that I can remember where there would have been any time to rack the slide after an altercation has begun and the assailant is already physically on you.
tl;dr - moar training = good.
