Wits students block entrance in protest

Burn the place down. Everything. Problem solved. Might as well do UCT as well. Oh well burn the whole country down.
Sit under tree finger up nose.
Oh fk we have no food.
Burnn the tree down.
Eish.
Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeve me.

I class myself as lucky that I didn't have to find the money to study, while I was studying, but I very definitely had to pay it all back once I'd graduated and it was a sobering lesson to start your first job with a large chunk of debt that needed to be paid off.

And yeah, tertiary education is still bollocks cheap in this country when you compare to other places. And I also 100% agree, that NSFAS and other funding mechanisms should be focused on valid qualifications and stop funding the degrees and courses that ultimately will mean a person will struggle to get employed. We need more STEM graduates in this country and that is where our funding efforts should be focused.
I'd say given the state of SA we need to promote trade schools more so than universities. Jobs like plumbers, electricians etc will always be in demand and is a surer source of income for students. They can always do further tertiary studies if they are so inclined.
STEM is nice and all, but kinda useless without the base in place.

Oh without a doubt, in a holistic sense.

I'm looking mostly at the Universities with my STEM statement.
We definintely need more trades getting qualified, and there are times in my life that I regret going to Uni and not doing a trade instead tbh.

From https://www.wits.ac.za/news/latest-news/general-news/2023/2023-03/wits-sets-the-record-straight.html:

4. Demand: Wits must register all 6 000 students on the SRC’s list

Response: There are about 200 students who qualify academically in 2023, and who owe funds to the university. Some of the protestors who want to register have failed multiple times, have lost their funding, and are now demanding to return. In one case, a student has been in the system for eight years, and is only in his second year of study.

Wits is committed to welcoming as many academically deserving students as possible. We cannot enrol students who have performed dismally simply because they feel they must be admitted. If they are not passing, they are taking the place of other academically deserving students.
