I'm so sorry—love, backstreetboy. God forgive me.
This is the one. The behemoth. Enjoy!

1. This took longer than expected since I had battery drain issues on my iPhone and Airpods. Factory resetting the airpods seemed to help and after contacting Afrihost my iPhone's battery life improved right away.
2. This will be a review of the cheapest (you can buy new) Apple products since contrary to popular belief, I didn't win the lotto and I want to find out if you really need to sell your house to get into the Apple ecosystem. Although this is not the best approach. More on that later.

AirPods 3
The build quality of them is great and if I turn them 3 'o clock they stay in my ear. I even dropped the left one from shoulder hight and they still work. These things are tiny and slippery. Pairing them is fast and easy as expected. Spatial audio I've turned off because I don't really see it as the next big thing in music and although it sounds fine I don't miss it. The sound quality of the AirPods are great and there's a good amount of bass as well.

TL;DR should you buy them?
At R4k they're expensive so if you can get them for R2k-R3k it's a no brainer. For R4k I'll rather add R2k and just get the Pro's that come with ANC and you can adjust the volume on the stem. Compared to the Huawei Freebirds 4i they sound pretty similar. The Huawei buds feels cheaper though but they come with ANC. They can be had for R999. Personally I like the Airpods and the great build quuality.

iPhone SE 2022
Now the two complaints about the phone is the screen size and battery life. The screen size I've gotten used to just the delete button in messages that gets cut off for some reason. The battery life is incredible. I get 4-6h screen on time. I last charged it yesterday morning. It also charges very fast. Compared to the 2020 version you'll get atleast 1h more SOT which for me is a big deal.

The OS
The setup is similar to Android apart from Siri struggling with my accent. I don't use the lock screen so we'll skip that and go to the home screen. On Android I love Kiss launcher and you can imitate it here on iOS. Basically it's a blank home screen and then you just search for the app you want. On Android there's a search bar at the bottom but here I just swipe down to initiate spotlight search. Works great and no need to install any app. In 2020 Apple finally embraced UX decisions Google made 12 years before and there's an "app drawer" now which is great to see. The wallpaper app also comes with solid colours which I love. On Android I had to install the Google Wallpapers app or have a black image saved on Google Photos. For some strange reason you have to change the wallpaper in the settings though. I found all changes have to be done through settings. I prefer the Android approach here where you can change the wallpaper from the home screen. Control Centre is great and has a few more controls out of the box. One big omission though is accessing settings through it. I've found a workaround and made a Shortcut widget for settings. It works but is suboptimal. Notifications work fine but I don't use it much even on Android so can't comment really. To dismiss a notification you have to swipe from right to left whereas I preferred the Android approach of you can swipe from any direction.

Settings are fine. What I don't like though is raise to wake is on by default but it's simple to turn off. I don't want my screen to go on when I put the phone in my pocket especially on a tiny battery as this one where you're trying to save battery life. For some reason lockscreen notifications also wake up the phone and you have to disable it on a per app basis. Luckily I turn off most app notifications but a global button would be welcome. Another gripe is that all apps you install will be at the bottom of the settings page. A submenu like on Android would be better and welcome. I love the dark mode as well since it's actually dark unlike Android which is more a dark grey

The app store is fine although I found it funny to see sponsored apps at the top. They're easy enough to ignore luckily. I can feel apps are bigger though since they take a bit longer to install. Apps like Whatsapp looks really great and has proper dark mode that turns black and not dark grey like Android. Some local apps like Tymebank feels subpar though. It is white whereas the Android version is black.

Apple pay works fine altough I don't like the double authentication. I've already unlocked the phone when I took it out of my pocket why do I need to authenticate again to make payment? I don't get it. You also need to use Stocard and save your loyalty cards to Stocard and only after can you import them into Apple Wallet one by one as a pass. The Google Wallet approach is simply better and you can add your loyalty cards directly in the app. Hopefully Apple is working on something similar.

Apple music is fine and comes with more music. I've found more obscure albums and EP's on there although I prefer the download section of Youtube Music. When switched on YTM will automagically download your most listened to playlists and albums. I also love the My Supermix playlist. To be fair I'll have to spend more time with Apple music.

The phone itself
I really like the build quality. It doesn't feel like Apple used any cheap components. The A15 Bionic is really fast. The earphone speaker sound really good and the loudpseaker punches above it’s weight and the phone even vibrate if you play music. The proximity sensor works as expected. On cheap Android phones it can be a hit or miss. Also the hardware silent button is a really useful addon. The camera focusses fast and I love it. I don't take much photos so I'm not going to comment on the quality. Daylight photos should be great though. There's even albeit slow 7.5 w Qi wireless charging but with the small battery it's more than fast enough though. All in all it's a really nice package.

TL;DR should you buy one?
Yes if you need a new phone fast then it's a good choice. Just make sure you actually do get the 2022 version. If you have time to wait and can go secondhand then I'd rather look at the iPhone 12. It'll look newer and have better battery life. They go for around R10k now which is around same price. You'll just probably have to replace the battery.

Compared to Android?
Well you can get the Samsung Galaxy A73 or Mi 12 lite for between R8k -R10k. The Samsung will get 4 Android updates so the iPhone should win with atleast 1 more update if not more. Also only the more expensive Xiaomi phones get 3 updates.

Going cheaper?
Well yes you can spend R3k-R5k and then just upgrade every second year but these cheap phones only get 1 or if you're lucky 2 Android updates. So again you'll be short by atleast a year.

Personally I'm happy with my choice.

Apple Watch SE 2 review

This one I actually got secondhand and for a few reasons.
1. I use it as a tool and it's something I wear all the time except when I shower/bath or charge it.
2. My father had a great NAD amp (320D? I think) and he used to babysit that thing until the day it got stolen. I still miss that amp. Some sites even listed it as the 7th best amp ever.
3. Unlike Gamin, Huawei and Google Wear watches Apple supports theirs for longer and this one will probably get 5-7 updates so you use it until the battery goes whereas the others only get +-3 years of updates.
4. I also think these hyper personal Apple products don't really hold their resale value as well as the iPhones.
5. If you buy it new you need to add a bumper cover or pay more for the stainless steel version. More on that later.
I got this off Phonetradr and they're great. I'm not sure about selling your phone on there (I know some people stuggle with payment) but buying stuff on there is great. The two questions I asked they came back to me and answered almost right away.

The review
One thing to note is apart from this watch not having a sapphire glass is there's also no always on display. Raise to wake works 95% of the time for me though. On my Huawei GT2e watch it worked around 90% of the time for reference.

This is classic Apple again and it's best you forget everything you know about smartwatches before you use it.
1. There's no custom downloadable watch faces. I actually like this since I've had a bunch of Chinese fitness trackers/smartwatches over the years and the custom watchface will either have Chinese characters or text that's misaligned. The Apple ones is also really customizable anyway.
2. Apple don't think step counting is the right way so they have 3 rings you have to fill up. The workaround is to add the complication to your watchface and tapping on it will open health. From there you can find your step count.
3. Apart from AFAIK one watchface non of them show the heart rate in real time so again the workaround is to have the icon on the watchface.
4. There's no QI wireless charging.
5. You can't play music through the watch speaker because Apple knows it'll sound like crap. You have to use bluetooth earphones.
6. Everything gets mirrored to your phone and its awesome. If you toggle do not disturb then it'll mirror and notifications also gets mirrored. Heck I'm sure not even the Google watch comes with this level of integration and detail.

The build quality is great and the watch straps are easy to attach. Even in direct sunlight the screen is really bright.

Apple pay works great if the POS machine supports NFC payments.

Music playback is fantastic. It's very easy to download music to the watch and another benefit I missed is that if you only have a 64gb phone then storing music on your 32gb watch frees up phone storage. I'd avoid Youtube Music though. It's just a remote control. You need to use Apple music.

The battery lasts me around 36h. I've tested the battery saver but it didn't do anything for me.

TLDR; should you buy one?
Well if you have an iPhone this is a no brainer purchase. If you have OCD though I'd get the stainless steel version and add a bumper cover. If you have an Android you'd have to get the Galaxy watch 4/5. It comes with an extra day of battery life AFAIK.
If you want longer battery life you need to look at Garmin, Suunto or Fitbit. IMO Garmin will probably be your best bet. Even for them the writing is on the wall though. I have no experience of any of them though and the Apple watch ultra 2 will probably have even better battery life and sway more Garmin diehards. Heck I saw an article the other day with benchmarks stating the A17 bionic is 40% more powerful than the A16. At this point in time it’s game set match for Apple.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion but if you just need a bog standerd glorified fitness tracker without music or payments than Huawei makes great smartwatches. Sure their health app is bloated but it does the job and works great even on iOS. Also you'll get 7+ days of battery life.

All in all I'm happy with my purchase though.

iPad 9th Gen 64gb Wifi

The build quality of this tablet is great altough it looks outdated with iPhone SE like Jeff Bezels. I don't mind it though and the fingerprint reader is a nice addition as well. The box comes with a charging brick and the tablet still has the lightning port. I can understand Apple phasing it out though since I went and got a 2 port one from the Pakistani shop nearby. AFAIK the 10th gen comes with USB Type C if you need that. The screen quality looks good for me reading the Huisgenoot on Magzter although the 4:3 aspect ratio takes getting used to since most Android tablets come with 16:10. I love that you can use it in portrait mode though and Apple probably once again made the right choice. The stereo speakers are fine but nothing to write home about but they're definitely good enough for dialogue in movies and series. The A13 bionic is fast enough and since the battery is really big you don't miss the efficiency of the A15 bionic. Battery life is really good.

I haven't used the camera or Apple Pay on it. I'm sure the camera will be good for scanning in receipts. The receipt scanner in the notes app is really underrated and better than the Android - Google Drive version I find.

One thing I touched on before is the lack of Debrid supported apps in the store but more on that later with my Apple TV review. The normal tablet apps I use are available on both Android and the Apple store but I'm sure there'll be more tablet optimized apps on the latter.

All in all a great purchase.

TL;DR should you buy one?
Well if you're already in the Apple ecosystem then it's a no brainer purchase. If you want to replace your laptop I'd look at the pro models though.

You can get a Dixon or Teclast Android tablet for around half the price but they won't get any updates and Netflix will be limited to 576p due to no Windevine L1 support.

You can also look at Samsung or Xiaomi but they will only get one or two updates if you're lucky. Samsung has the dual apps and even the Galaxy app store not to mention the Samsung tablets I've played around with comes with Vodacom branded firmware as well.
This iPad should get 5+ big iOS releases still making it a no brainer purchase.

Apple TV 4k 3rd gen 64gb wifi

There was a big debate on here about Ethernet vs Wifi and my thoughts is I went back to watching the original and second gen launch with Steve Jobs. He mentioned you don't have to wire your house since they come with Wifi and it was the big selling point. Case close.

The box doesn't come with a HDMI cable so you need to provide your own. I'll probably get a few 8k ones since even though the HDMI test in the software says they're fine I doubt it. THe build quality is great once again and the remote is alliminium. I don't mind the plastic Android TV remotes though. I also like that the battery is included and there's a USB type C port for charging. The A15 bionic is really nice and the box is fast.

Before I could use it there was a 2gb+ update that took some time to download and install. The Apple download and installation time estimates are really off and not really usable IMO. The screensavers are really nice but I sometimes miss the beautiful Android TV images like https://clients3.google.com/cast/chromecast/home

Going through the settings there's a bunch of them and you can really fine tune things much more than with Android TV.

THe big streaming apps are all on the store. Netflix ineractive doesn't work for some reason and I send through a request. Hopefully they will act on it.

My major grype however is there's no debrid apps. You can sideload Kodi and I'll probably take a look at it in the future. The Wako app doesn't work on the TV otherwise I would've swallowed the $2 per month charge for it. On my phone and tablet the Stemio PWA app and some Apple shortcuts work fine. If I combine that with Infuse Pro and webdav it kind of does the job in a hacky way on the Apple TV.

TL;DR should you buy one?
Well if you stream your content legally this box will last you for 10+ years and is well worth the price. If you also stream some content unofficially then you'll stuggle.

So far this is the only Apple device where the comprimise might be too big for me. There's no denying though this is another product category they started where Microsoft et al. failed miserably.

Macbook Air M1 256gb

I only really got this because I wanted to import my Chrome passwords. Last night I transferred my 2FA codes to Apple and it was painless. The design of this laptop is really great. The Huawei D14 I’ve played around with has a plastic back but this is all aluminum which I love. The build quality, screen and speakers are the best I’ve experienced. I can just imagine the M2 Pro / Max laptops.

The trackpad is really big and takes getting used to. I love that you can click anywhere on it. I must still learn all the gestures though. MacOS is really customizable and the dark mode is great. It looks similar to KDE plasma. So far I’ve only had one crash (Epic Games). Most of my apps work including lifetime ones I purchased over the years. For pCloud I had to install macfuse and give it kernel rights. Apple does have an API now so hopefully pCloud jumps on that.

Game support is abysmal although there’s a few games on Steam and Epic that support Mac’s. Counter strike works although there’s a missing dependency I’ve just ignored. I was surprised to see an old game System Shock 2 from 2000 is supported. Used to play the demo of that back in the day. Can’t wait to download and play that. Out of the 356 games on Steam I got 138 (39%) supports the Mac. It’s not too bad. The M1 chip is fast enough for me and you get great battery life. If I play games though the battery goes down faster.

TL;DR should you buy one
Yes these M1/M2 Mac’s are really good. If the programs you need to use support the Mac then this is a no brainer purchase.

Final thoughts

So yeah this is the Apple ecosystem. I still want to ge a M2 Mac Mini perhaps and some Homepod Mini's later on. It's should be noted that no ecosystem is perfect but this one is the most complete by a mile. If you can get behind the Apple way of doing things then the ecosystem is very rewarding.

The Philips test

Will this ecosystem save me money like my Philips products? It's too early to say but the Apple TV should last around 10 years +. The Apple watch should save me some money as well not having to buy a new cheap fitness tracker every 6 months because the old one died or the strap broke. The SE 2022 and iPad should get updates for a long while still. Since the Mac now use Apple's own chips it should also get a few more updates I think. It will probably surprise me like the Philips Sonicare toothbrush I have. It will definitely save me time with the integration and the mere fact that come upgrade time I'm not going to be looking at 20 different Android phones and comparing the specs of 5 of them.

Could I have done it sooner?

Perhaps but I feel it's only since iOS 14 with widgets and the app drawer where the switch was made easier for me. Also it's only been recently with the A14 and A15 bionic chips where battery life improved. I don't want battery anxiety during the day and have to worry about that.

TL;DR should you get into the ecosystem?
Well it will be personal preference but it's a really great time to get into the Apple ecosystem. For me it's very slowly turning into a no brainer move and something I'm glad I did.

PS: Do I now hate Android?
No I will still keep up to date with Android and play around with it.

Also the hardware silent button is a really useful addon.
I feel the exact opposite. I'd like some more customization on volume settings. This is what I want:

Ringer to be off (I have a watch that will ring/vibrate so that I know I have to answer)
All other system sounds/alerts and App sounds must be working.

The silent button is a all or nothing approach. For now, I've settled on silent button off and ringtone to be very soft.

We are going to have to print and frame this thread!

@epah should sit down before clicking on this thread to avoid the potential repercussions of a surprise leg wobble, fainting, wetness, unzipping etc.

Double authentication is actually a great security feature, Imagine if some snatched your phone from your hands while it was unlocked and went on a shopping spree. Apple pay doesn't require pin even for big amounts so this would be a huge loss. It also prevents you from tapping your phone by mistake.
