ONLY MATERNITY AND TRAUMA UNITS ALLOWED TO OPERATE IN KHAYELITSHA, SAYS NEHAWU

CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) says only maternity and trauma units will be allowed to operate at health facilities in and around Khayelitsha.

These hospitals best audited their dispensaries.

Nonsense.

Tell that to the people unable to reach the hospital for life-saving treatment because some savage doesn't care.

There are limits imposed on your freedom here in Africa. They're simply arbitrary and at the whim of the masses instead of defined in a codified set of laws applied equally to all in a society that respects the rule of law.

Personally I'd take a civilised court case where rationality and evidence matter over mob justice any day of the week.

There are just as much people stopping someone from getting to the hospital as there are people driving over those same people and getting away with it. I was hijacked, fked the same guy up on the side of the road and I've never heard from him or the police since. In Africa you got to look after yourself.

You get a civil court case where the prisoner gets a suspended sentence, you get a case where a a feral man murders little kids for their body parts just to get locked up with food, shelter and access to an education. There are people still waiting for justice today for their loved ones and when it comes, it comes too late or not at all.

I get that you're an idealist that has hope and compassion for people, but it took me years of watching people suffering to know the only person that makes the rules is you yourself. You choose if you want to stop and deal with the police after driving over the drunk guy lying in the middle of the road, you choose if you want to stop and listen to the guy who wants to rob you, you choose if you believe the cop when he says the suspect is being investigated instead of giving him time to run away.

How quickly would those strikers fk off if one flash bang went off? Who is going to rip a child from an ambulance with a gun in their face?

There are still limits on your freedom. They're simply often not defined by the state.

The limit is arbitrary, it is defined by the person with the bigger arsenal.

All you do with these statements is reinforce the point I'm making.

Most of these unions, including NEHAWU, are COSATU affiliates and COSATU is a part of the tripartite alliance.

They are big on the ad.

That is my point - have the bigger arsenal and stay out of trouble.

Anyone seen SAFTU's demands running up to the 20th?

The 11 demands Saftu wants met before 'national shutdown'

Saftu's demands are:

  • jobs for the unemployed at a living wage;
  • end load-shedding;
  • implement a universal basic income grant;
  • lower the cost of living;
  • a minimum wage of R72 per hour for all workers;
  • end crime and violence against women and children;
  • transition to renewable energy without job losses;
  • renationalise certain entities, including SAA;
  • reverse budget cuts and increase government spending in critical areas of service delivery;
  • expand the public sector wage bill for better pay for teachers, nurses, officers and social workers; and
  • pay government workers well and protect collective bargaining.

There is something more behind these strikes. The student strike is also rather intense, and it isn't even attached to a campaign. Ignoring the economic conditions to which everyone here is exposed, there is a brew.

This seems to be a big step towards making the country ungovernable. Though, it is not like it is being governed in any case... but that is up to the ruling party to explain.

Please stop saying "ruling".

NEHAWU PROTEST: PHAAHLA SAYS 'VIOLENCE' PROMPTED CONSULTS WITH LEGAL TEAM

...

GOVT ‘COMMITTED’

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has assured Nehawu that government is committed to resolving the wage dispute by protesting healthcare workers.

Speaking to workers affiliated to the union at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg on Thursday morning, Lesufi said that the protest had severely affected the province’s hospitals.

The union is demanding an increment of at least 10%, while government is only offering 4.7%.

Lesufi said that government would avail itself for talks.

"I want to thank you that you are allowing patients and staff to come in. We will respect your right to protest peacefully. But at one point, everything will end up in negotiations and we will hear your concerns," Lesufi said.

I need to ask Panyasa, aren't they already beyond the point which was the negotiations? This is them now returning to the table where the state is open to compromise. Appeasing the union...

PHAAHLA ‘MISLEADING’ THE PUBLIC

Nehawu accused Health Minister Joe Phaahla of misleading the public after he claimed that the union had been disrupting services at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday night, Phaahla condemned the acts of violence by the union, saying that some patients lost their lives as a result of the protest.

But the union said that this was not true.

Reports of violence and intimidation had been received from hospitals around the country.

Nehwawu said that Phaahla painted an unpleasant picture of the union’s protest.

The union’s Mandla Mdluli said that the protest had no malicious intent.

"The community have been led to believe that we are criminals; we are closing patients out. We are not - we are health workers; we understand the pain by patients… even the patients themselves are saying at least we are giving them access."

The state lost control.

Failed by the government, yet, COSATU has a massive board at their HQ advertising to vote ANC.

The government isn't in control, and neither does COSATU seem to be in control,

Nehawu will not bully us into striking - Sadtu

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) has accused members of Nehawu of intimidation and trying to force teachers to join the public sector wage strike.

The teachers' union claims striking healthcare workers attacked their members who were attending a workshop in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday.

The union's Nomusa Cembi says this was not the first time they have borne the brunt of The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union's ire.

She says Nehawu members previously attacked a pregnant teacher in KZN.

She warns that lawlessness will merely serve to undermine the trade union sector.

"Sadtu wants to make it clear that we will not be bullied by anyone or union for that matter, during these negotiations. South Africa is a constitutional democracy and not a banana republic.

"The lawlessness we are experiencing undermines the essence of unionism. As education workers, we equally fought for this democracy. We will not stand by the side-lines."

Good on SADTU.

I was thinking laying charges and following through. I understand they don’t have the forces to stop this at this point but maybe if you are sitting in jail with murder charges you will be the lesson for those who want to strike like this in the future?

Other far more peaceful countries have those forces and riots are dealt with swiftly:
