South Africa becoming a cashless society

SA is already largely a cashless society for the middle and upper class.

Its very rare for me to have cash on me, and places that don't support cards or contactless payments just get avoided.

We are a country of 2 economies.. the formal one is largely cashless, and the informal one is almost entirely cash based.

So I guess beggars at traffic lights and car guards will now have to adapt too and walk around with YOCO card machines or Snapscan & Zapper QR codes.

Capitec users definitely believe in cash. Seems they dont know that their cards can be used to swipe at tills, seems they dont know that EFT's exist nor do they know you can buy online with your card. I have never seen people so backwards in my life.

South Africans are increasingly spending online and making use of contactless payment methods. Discovery Bank and Visa believe this will result in South Africa becoming a cashless society.

Not for the reasons the banks think. The banks are not fully aware of what is happening out on the streets.

You'll be surprised, there's a big drive to capture the township market.

It's really only car guards, pump attendants, beggars, Eskom power stations and Phala Phala left dealing in cash...
