Dark days: Accusations of capture and governance instability rock UCT

Drama llama really can't go without a bang...

BREAKING | Embattled UCT VC Phakeng placed on special leave

Embattled University of Cape Town vice-chancellor Mamokgethi Phakeng has been placed on special leave with “immediate effect”.

News24 understands that an interim vice-chancellor will be appointed with immediate effect.

Phakeng's last day was scheduled for Friday after reaching an exit deal with council last week.

Looks like another shiitstorm brewing.
Quite a few students have been excluded due to massive debts ( you know the deal, UCT has gone out of their way to help but everything must be for free).
SRC is blaming the acting white VC now that the VC of Twitter is gone.

Sodding whytes....always up to no good...

So why didn't they fire her?
R12m is peanuts. She definitely would have brought up lot of things to the fore. Best is to let it go. I have heard a lot about her from many people that worked with her and it is very confusing as to why she behaves the way she does. Should have met her in Jozi when I had a chance at a private gathering.

The African Way

Destroy millions of peoples lives with your broken ideology. Africa has successfully been decolonized and plundered.

South Africa is gone and just another failed African state. Well done it only took you 30 years.

Thing is how they keep doing this to themselves..

Phakeng made sure to seed her way out,

Stun grenades and arrests: Protesting UCT students chant for Phakeng's return

Protesting University of Cape Town (UCT) students chanted for the reinstatement of former vice-chancellor Mamokgethi Phakeng, who retired early amid accusations of bullying, which she denied.

Students demanding that acting vice-chancellor Sue Harrison leave, shouted, "Sue must fall" and "Sue must go", at a mass meeting on Friday after a dramatic morning involving stun grenades and arrests.

They also announced an alliance with the Democratic Transport Logistics and Allied Workers Union (Detawu) and received a pledge of support from the Congress of SA Trade Unions.

The protesters said they were pushing for the admission of more than 7 000 students who could not register because they were in arrears with fees.

I am sure that there was police intervention at certain points within Phakeng's tenure. Regardless, she has political support, and it is being channelled through the students. People can say what they want, but Phakeng has a legacy at UCT, she is an idol where only her positives will be remembered.

UCT only has one chance to navigate through this... they best hope that the Judges 'respect' their decision.

Also, google the name "Athabile Nonxuba" mentioned in the article. A former #FeesMustFall activist at UCT who was named in a previous UCT interdict. So he's gone from a useless protester to a comfortable union "job".

Some would argue that it is a calling.

I see meneer Basson got trained,

No fashion or dancing videos while Rome is burning. Refreshing change at UCT

Aldrin Sampear replied:

No man Adriaan. This is yet another example of how the conduct of newsroom managers further diminishes the confidence news audience have in the media. It also detrimental to the relationship between your foot soldiers and newsmakers.

To which Basson responded:

Please help me understand your outrage, Aldrin. The former VC literally posted about fashion, dancing and boxing gloves while her university was shutting down due to student protests. Read Reddy’s letter about the comms breakdown with UCT community. That’s what I responded to.

I apologise if my tweet caused hurt or created the wrong impression that a VC can’t lead & have fun at once. That was not the point I was trying to make. If you read Prof Reddy’s statement and followed the tumultuous exit of Prof Phakeng you would have understood the context. 1/3

On 24 Feb student protests started at UCT. Prof Phakeng was still the VC. If you were a UCT student or lecturer or parent, you would not have known about this or what UCT was doing about it by following Prof Phakeng’s posts. 2/3

Prof Reddy’s statement speaks for itself. UCT’s comms about protests have been terrible. But I have learnt this platform doesn’t tolerate any criticism of Prof Phakeng, and I will stay in my lane and await the finalisation of the Mpati Commission’s report. 3/3

Adriaan is learning that it only works one way. Truth behold, I agree that it is best to wait on the Mpati Commission's report.

yes, white students didn't come and that proves she is the racial one. Superior genes indeed.
If businesses / sport / schooling etc are forced into having X black staff, Y white staff, and **** the coloured staff, as they weren't oppressed during apartheid*, so nothing for you.

*Oh wait...

For a rainbow nation, its really all about me me me from the black community.

To reiterate - her tweet states "Enjoyed supper with my students on my last Saturday as VC of UCT"

My students = only the black ones it seems. Pretty sure there are other hue's there that are "her" students. Or do you disagree?

"very black, very proud". Agenda is very clear there. Very inclusive - not.

I don't get it. Her twitter feed is literally full of photos of herself posing for the camera, and little more than that, during the tumultuous months that UCT's been going through. Why is Adriaan Basson being accused of racism for pointing this out?
