Anyone driven this route lately and is it safe to drive in the day? I need to do it soon and have been told to avoid it due to safety and rock throwing at cars? But avoiding it will add another 3 hours to my trip…

I choose to go via bloem.
Rock throwing I presume is at windburg, but clocolan lady brand is a war road. Taxies do take it, but you must have time.

The road is wrecked from Marquard to Clocolan. Clocolan to Ladybrand some huge monsters waiting to swallow you.
What is your alternate route?
Bloemfontein to Ladybrand is good. Then the potholes start after Ladybrand.

Sorry, you are wright, Marquard to Clocolan.

Go via Bloem or you will be replacing mags and tyres. Potholes are half a meter and deeper.

And don't do what I did, went to RSA border control, drive past lesotho control. When I came back the fun started.

What fun?

I can't fly, need the car for certain reasons.

Should be safe through out the day. Even done it extensively through the night, I have been through most of Free State a lot in the past months and to be honest your biggest worry should be potholes. There are virtually no roads left in the Free State, and this is not an exaggeration. Your average speed will
Probably be 30km/h. Make sure you have the ground clearance because if not you will be scraping your underbelly quite Often. I see dozen of cars on the side of the road with burst tyres. So take it slow, like really slow. Try to avoid bursting your tyres so don’t make this trip in a hurry.

Ask me I know 11 tyres and 4 mags later in 4 years. Slowly as in 30km/h
Thanks Ace ya tunc.
