SAHRC finds against Stellenbosch University regarding only-English policy

Pride in your language means you speak it. It's a personal thing. That's all good. You don't try to force others to speak it.
I think that was one worm, Wim van Heerden who tried forcing the Inglish onto everyone.

Oh yea I'm certain it's down to one prick that doesn't like Afrikaans folks, or at most a handful, of people, responsible for this. The average person is too reasonable to do something like this.

Maybe but more likely a kapo type (Max Price) doing anything to cling onto his job, power and pension.

Not that the SAHRC is a real court or have any jurisdiction to even decide on these matters, but I surprised to see the commie tribunal got something correct.

As a soutie who went to Stellenbosch, I never had anything but the nicest experience when dealing with people who spoke Afrikaans. Never had a single incident when someone refused to speak English to me, and this was before all the woke b.s that was lurking under the surface came to light. I just learned how to ask someone to speak to you in English and every single person I encountered who started a conversation in Afrikaans would happily speak English.

This is how civilised people behave in a multilingual setting. Demanding everyone speaks English to you immediately is something that only Americans do, and like clockwork, the woke morons here have deepthroated American grievance culture.

A week's old article, but I am intrigued by Jansen,

JONATHAN JANSEN | When did SAHRC become the human right-wing commission?

Why on earth would a commission stir up trouble over something so simple and opt for raw and regressive politics?

The South African Human Rights Commission is threatening to become the handmaiden of Afrikaans right-wing activists on university campuses. Its recent “investigative report into allegations of unconstitutional language practices at certain Stellenbosch University residences” is, quite frankly, incompetent. In fact, if one of my undergraduate students had written such a blundering report I would have failed them in any language.

It is pay gated, but the gist is right there. Did Jansen read the headlines or the report? I like how he starts with the report being culpable punitive.

Ou Wim in the kaka, again. Hypocrite.

And another one,

And another one,

Unlike the situation at some other universities, de Villiers is backed by SU's statutory bodies. It is a situation where it is the outside peering into the inside. Protected privilege and all that.

In the end they apologised...

Stellenbosch University apologises to students over language rule during welcoming period

Stellenbosch University (SU) has apologised to students at two residences after it was found that their rights were violated in 2021 when they were instructed to speak only English during their welcoming period.

In a statement issued late on Monday, the university said it "unequivocally apologises to all students in Minerva and Irene [residences] who… felt that their human rights and dignity were affected by not being able to speak Afrikaans in a social context".

As part of its apology, SU said it would implement extensive training on applying and implementing the language policy for student leaders.

It stated:

We will also ask the language committee of the council to consider whether a change is necessary to the language policy to provide the clarity suggested by the SAHRC. We acknowledge that our journey of transformation requires constant attention and we reiterate our commitment to a multilingual, multicultural university which respects human rights and dignity and where all our stakeholders feel welcome.

The SU council said there were some aspects of the SAHRC report on language in SU residences that it wished to respond to more fully or even challenge, but added that it would begin implementing the recommendations ahead of the May deadline.

Going back to their statement in 2021,

Let me say straight away that the suggestion that students across campus, as a matter of University policy, have at any time been prohibited from communicating in Afrikaans is false. There is no ban on Afrikaans at Stellenbosch University – not in lecture halls, in residences, or anywhere else on campus. That is not our policy," Prof De Villiers stated.
