Apple TV constantly freezing

The Apple TV 4k is great but I find that investing in an Xbox 1 S works better for me albeit a bit more irritating. PS5 dont like to play some content *cough*

Do note that some LG TVs has Apple TV+ included. So I sold my 4K apple TV Gen 1 as I used the money difference on an LG Nano TV instead.

Try screenshare or chromecast from your phone and see if it does the same thing. When using Airplay it also freezes.

ie bigger screen needs more bandwidth. Also run some speedtests when this happens. See speedtest screenshot taking during freeze episode.

I have a 100mb line and get stuttering some times with HD content. Which can be irritating.

You can try reset your apple tv back to original and see how that works. also see if a latest update for it. SW is up to date, log out and log back in to my Apple account doesn't help, ditto restart of ATV. I'll try the reset of the ATV and see if that works.

You said you have wifi speed? Try running a cable between the apple tv and the router. see how that works. but if you do that already then try connect via wifi. See how the speed differs. I'm going to hook up an ethernet cable between the ATV and router this weekend and see what happens.

What are you trying to watch also? Movies at 1080. I'll try downspec the res and see if that helps.

I'll take a look at that option, it may certainly be something to consider. I don't want to rush out and buy new hardware when the network may be the issue though.

So I had similar issues on Tuesday, but slightly different scenario.

ATV 4k, 1Gb down internet, ATV connected via ethernet and was trying to watch Hello Tomorrow and it kept getting stuck. I had to close TV+ and re-open it to get it to start again, then will get 5-10 min of smooth playback, then it gets stuck again. This was also happening on my M1 air, but that was on WiFi.

Netflix, YouTube, Plex, Amazon Video, Twitch all work 100%, issue is just faced with TV+

From Apple TV service yes. Plays 100% on iPad, freezes when playing direct through ATV. I will hook up an ethernet cable between the router and ATV this weekend and see if that helps. Appreciate your advice so far, thanks.

It does sound like a local problem then if the iPad plays it perfectly.

What router/wireless device are you using?

Are you using the default DNS from the ISP?

I have an older Apple TV module (3rd Gen, A1469) that we stream Apple movies on. I am far from everything but have Wi-Fi download speed of 7.3Mb/s and upload of 6.1Mb/s. My problem is it's a PITA to watch movies. The movie freezes, loses sound, gives me "unable to play content on this TV" messages etc. Even when downloading a movie and then using AirPlay from an iPad Mini, I get the same issues.

I have checked every fix I can find online but none work. Rebooted everything from TV, Apple TV, router, iPad etc numerous times. No joy. Before spending R3k on a new Apple TV, I was hoping you clever guys could assist me please.
If you got bad range its either better Wi-Fi time or Ethernet Time.

Save some bandwidth for the rest of us, Future Man!

He is on the fence about becoming a spendthrift.

If it’s doing it when having been downloaded too over Airplay then it’s a local network problem.

Good catch.

@Dolby can you help?
My ATV has only frozen once - so don’t have advice :( I see most have covered, but I thought maybe the speed / Ethernet was an issue - but I see this is a recent development.

Factory reset maybe :)

A recent development likely means it has nothing to do with the ATV and everything to do with the wireless.

Most likely the channels are set statically and with load shedding and all things rebooting it’s fighting with another network.

Hence asking what router it is.

So, some feedback for those that are interested.

After checking speeds, connections, connectivity etc, I finally drew a deep breath and got an ATV 64Gb 4K module. Setting it up was a breeze using my iPhone and took all of about 5 minutes max. Everything runs much smoother and faster than with the old ATV. Looks like it was the old module that was causing the problems. I wasn't planning on spending R3k but at least movie watching is now entertainment rather than pain.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions offered here. Much appreciated.

Ja, tried that too without success, thanks. I think the older unit was just too old to play nicely with the modern protocols.

Could be hey. Could be the apps not liking the older unit. Have you tried ruling out the TV? Tried different TVs? Swapped out the HDMI cable? Try hotspotting the ATV to your 4/5g as well. I doubt it's the connection though. Sounds like the newer apps are not entirely compatible.

I ended up just getting a new ATV 4k unit and everything is as smooth as silk. I guess I got lucky though. It's like having a vehicle problem that nobody can diagnose. These days they just keep replacing items in the hopes it solves the problem eventually. Can be a very expensive exercise.
