Movie Mini-Review Thread - Part III

You don't have to agree with me. It is my opinion. Hollywood and the film industry as a whole have been caught up in the extreme social and political shifts we have seen since around 2016. There has also been heavy criticism of the Academy's track record when it came to diversity, a brief Google search highlights this.

Of course I do not disagree that the Oscars have always been as much a popularity contest as a merit-based process. We're just replacing popularity with optics.
My point is that it's always been that way, since the Academy was founded in the 20s, just with different things that matches the times. They've always been caught up in social and political shifts, including anti-union politics, anti-left redbaiting with artists being blacklisted, racial and gender discrimination, implicit and often explicit, etc. Recency bias can be pretty strong.

This is an interesting interview with the journo that wrote a book about the history of the awards' scandals and changes over time.

I don't think it's ever really been a popularity contest either. Sometimes popular movies do well, but I'd be surprised if there's ever been a clear correlation. Very popular movies (even well made ones) often get snubbed completely.

And in fairness - it was never set up to be an award show for popular movies. It's a group of insular, narcissistic-by-design artistic professionals who decide between themselves what movies they liked in the last year. :p

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023) 4/10

Pot kak mess of a film, incoherent & come across cheaply made. The only reason to watch it is to see how they can fark up the Pooh characters (who look horrible) & some bewbs. Wasted premise.

Amazingly there will be a sequel.
