Water outages of up to a week expected in parts of Nelson Mandela Bay

Residents in Nelson Mandela Bay may experience water outages of up to a week at a time as the city blocked supply to some reservoirs in order to redirect water to areas that have not had water for days.

In a statement on Sunday morning, mayor Retief Odendaal said the recent power outages coupled to the fact that residents had not reduced consumption exacerbated the crisis.

“Over the last four days we have seen three major electricity outages that has affected our ability to transfer water into the city. The latest one being a substation that has exploded in the Coega IDZ last night.
...
"We have therefore started to block water supply to some reservoirs in a bid to redirect water to zones that have been without water for days. This will mean that different areas will start experiencing water outages which may last for up to a week.

“We have to say that we are really disappointed that consumer behaviour is non-responsive to this crisis. Whilst there are so many people that are doing their utmost in conserving our precious water resources, there are also those that remain irresponsible by refusing to change their water consumption lifestyle.”

Is the metro still installing flow restrictors at the households with excessive consumption? We've been running off of tank water for the past few months, although we aren't a very water-heavy household to begin with (sub-2kl per month).
The time has come for a serious look at curbing those businesses that consume huge quantities of water daily.

And there is absolutely no need to waste potable water on washing your car/bakkie/truck unless it is used in the conveyance of food-/medical- or related goods.

Until the people end up with dry taps, I don't think the severity of the situation will sink in.

Until enough people... which, given the water coming from Gariep, is somewhat unlikely.

So about that predicted rain we were supposed to have for two days straight…not even enough to register in my rain meter :(
Really? Filled my tanks.

EDIT: so that's more than 5000l I've harvested in 42 days (excluding 6± loads of washing a week @50l per load).

Yup. Zilch here in Westering. Inlaws in Draaifontein measured 5mm and my folks in Port Alfred measured a decent 17mm
