Kia is on a massive EV drive, production version to be shown later in the year./

Kia EV5 Concept

Kia Corporation unveiled the Concept EV5 at Kia Chinese EV Day. The all-electric SUV concept took center stage at the event to present the brand's strategy to establish global leadership in electrification.

Inspired by Kia's 'Opposites United' design philosophy, the Concept EV5 provides a preview of a production all-electric SUV model that will be launched first in China in late 2023. The Concept EV5 also heralds a new design era for Kia and gives an intriguing glimpse into the aesthetic direction of the brand's future fully electric models.

"The Kia Concept EV5 takes influence from the contrast and complementarity of natural landscapes and man-made architecture. It is designed to inspire our customers on every journey, while providing sustainable and environmentally responsible solutions. Created for those who seek inventive new ideas, the SUV brings together emotional form language with innovative, user-focused interior architecture," explained Karim Habib, Executive Vice President, and Head of Kia Global Design Center.

A new era of EV design for a 'borderless life'

Kia's 'Opposites United' design philosophy, which celebrates the creative tension formed from the fusion of often seemingly contrasting visual influences of nature and modernity, has galvanized Kia's design team in the delivery of the Concept EV5's striking aesthetics. In particular, the 'Bold for Nature' pillar of the philosophy has influenced the form and stance of the Concept EV5, creating a unique SUV to support those pursuing a 'borderless life' where there is no boundary between their enjoyment and appreciation of nature and the city.

New Kia EV5 SUV concept hints at electric Sportage successor

Shock unveiling of EV9's little brother, complete with swivelling seats; Chinese launch later this year

Just a week after unveiling its new electric flagship, the seven-seat EV9, Kia has previewed its third bespoke EV with a similarly styled SUV concept called the EV5.

The new Kia EV5 is, as the name suggests, smaller than the freshly revealed EV9 but follows the larger car in adopting the 'Opposites United' design ethos that will define all future models from the Korean brand.

Referred to officially as the Concept EV5 for now, the electric SUV will be launched in China later this year – which is why it has been unveiled with no prelude at the brand's Chinese EV Day event.

Kia hasn't said whether it will come to Europe as well but has promised to reveal "future plans for the other global markets" in due course.

Technical details also remain largely under wraps, but the production version of the EV5 is likely to ride on a variation of the E-GMP platform that underpins the two existing bespoke Kia EVs and another four that will follow before 2026.

In size and stature, the EV5 looks roughly comparable to today's combustion-engined Kia Sportage, so it could feasibly serve as a rival to similarly conceived family EVs including the Nissan Ariya, Toyota bZ4X and Volkswagen ID 4.

While Kia hasn't yet offered any hints as to performance and pricing, the EV5 is likely to match those cars (and its siblings) in offering a choice of two- and four-wheel-drive powertrains; and if it's offered with the same 77kWh battery as the EV6, it will offer a competitive maximum range of more than 300 miles.

Enjoy the view with the Kia EV5 Concept’s swivel seats

The chances of ‘em making production are virtually nil, but still… they’d make for a lovely picnic

Barely a week after revealing the seven-seat, fully electric and very striking Kia EV9, the South Korean manufacturer has unveiled this swivel-seat, fully electric and very striking EV5.

This one’s only a concept, obviously, but Kia says it'll preview a production model, set to make its debut in China later this year. Where it’ll go after that remains to be seen, but ‘future plans for other global markets’ will be decided ‘in due course’ There you go then.

The highlight is those swivel seats, which Kia claims are designed to blur ‘the boundaries between outdoor and indoor spaces’. Or something. We think that means they’d be rather nice to pull up somewhere with a view and enjoy a bite to eat.

Performance details have yet to be disclosed, but you can bet your bottom dollar that it’ll sit on the firm’s E-GMP platform.

Kia EV5 Concept Looks Like a Baby EV9 But May Only Be for China

Bring the production EV5 to the U.S., you cowards.

Do you like the looks of the new Kia EV9 but wish it was smaller? Do you like the size of the Kia EV6 but wish it was boxier? If so, then Kia finally has the answer for you in the form of the Concept EV5. And while it’s just a concept for now, Kia says the production version will go on sale later this year. Unfortunately, there’s one downside: Kia plans to sell it in China and says, “Details regarding any future plans for the other global markets will be made in due course.”

So that’s disappointing news. Especially because we’re big fans of the styling. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but the design does a great job of shrinking down the EV9's look to a smaller size. We’re just not sure how much smaller it actually is because Kia has yet to release the dimensions. Based on the name, we assume it’ll be about the same size as the EV6 or maybe a little smaller, but we could be wrong. We’re not infallible.

Kia EV5 is a preview of a future electric SUV

Kia has only just debuted its largest electric SUV - the EV9 - and the company is already following with a smaller EV. At the EV Day in China, the company introduced the Kia EV5, a much smaller electric SUV, but clearly inspired by its larger sibling.

How much of a concept car is the EV5? Not much it turns out, just like its bigger sibling the EV9, the production model will look very much like the concept vehicle. When will it be available? The company plans for the EV5 to go on sale later this year in the Chinese market.

The EV5 name suggests the car will be slightly shorter than the current EV6 and it will be targeted at a different customer. It's not minuscule, the EV5 will sit above the updated Kia Niro EV and will be based on the E-GMP platform. That means familiar powertrains and batteries.

While we can be sure the suicide-style rear door from the concept won’t make it to the reproduction model, the exterior design is very close to what we’ll see on the road-going EV5. Just like with the EV9, Kia dropped the futuristic doors and interior but delivered a futuristic-looking car anyway. The EV5 interior won’t be as futuristic as we see here on the concept vehicle, but the swivel seats may be optional according to Kia representatives at the event.

Kia's upcoming EV5 to be unveiled August 25 - takes aim at Tesla Model Y

As the electric vehicle revolution accelerates, automakers are battling to ride the wave, and Kia Motors is no exception. The Korean auto manufacturer is preparing to debut its new electric SUV, the EV5, at the annual Chengdu Motor Show, which starts on August 25. It's a bold move, placing Kia directly in the firing line of a showdown with the Tesla Model Y.

Hot on the heels of unveiling their flagship EV9, Kia introduced the EV5 concept earlier this year, hinting at a broader strategy to penetrate different segments of the electric market. The new SUV follows the design mantra "opposites united," reflecting an exciting shift in Kia's design language.

Gone are the softer curves of yesteryear's models, replaced by a sharper and more imposing figure, radiating a potent presence. The EV5 flaunts the novel Digital Tiger Face, a modern take on Kia's traditional Tiger Nose Grille while maintaining the characteristic dynamism Kia is known for.

Inside, the EV5 is crafted to foster a "space of coexistence," a design philosophy focusing on creating a harmonious blend of individuals, nature, and technology. While we anticipate some tweaks from the concept to the production model, we can still expect an interior that enhances interaction and connectivity. The EV5, as Karim Habib, head of Kia Global Design Center, affirms, is all about inspiring customers with sustainable and environment-friendly solutions.

Regulatory filling gives us our best look at the Kia EV5 yet

It appears that Kia's been keeping secrets. Or at least, it tried. Thanks to some insider snapshots, we've got a sneak peek of Kia’s upcoming EV5 electric SUV. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good spoiler now and then?

Introduced to us in its conceptual attire back in March, the EV5 follows closely on the heels of Kia's flagship EV9 SUV release. For those keeping a tab on size, it's nestled comfortably between the larger EV9 and the slightly smaller EV6. The EV5 proudly boasts Kia's fresh "opposites united" design mantra. And for the nostalgic lot lamenting the disappearance of Kia’s iconic “Tiger Nose” grille, there's some solace. The "Digital Tiger Face" is here to leave a mark, albeit a more futuristic one.

What's under the hood, you ask? Well, figuratively, since EVs don’t technically have a traditional hood. The EV5 will ride on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform. But, slight twist - while its cousin, the EV6, harnesses the power of an 800V system, the EV5 opts for a modest 400V. It's all about making quality electric driving more wallet-friendly.

Kia EV5

Kia presented its all-electric compact SUV, the Kia EV5, at the 2023 Chengdu Motor Show in China. The Kia EV5 brings a new era of electric mobility to the compact SUV sector to meet the needs of millennial families.

The EV5 seamlessly blends transformative design, exceptional versatility and outstanding comfort to deliver a harmoniously balanced vehicle. Every attribute of the EV5 has been designed and engineered to provide the flexibility required by modern families and enhance their enjoyment on every journey.

Exterior Design: Creativity inspired by the co-existence of nature and modernity

Determined to eclipse the accepted aesthetics of the existing compact SUV sector, and create a vehicle with a confident, bold, new, genre-redefining presence, Kia drew inspiration for the EV5 from the brand's acclaimed 'Opposites United' design philosophy.

Embracing the subtle interplay between natural landscapes and contemporary architecture, the Kia EV5 features strong and solid lines. It presents a modern interpretation of the Kia tiger mask with a wide and unique stance, all shaped with passion and precision.

"The Kia EV5 was created to redefine the compact SUV genre with a form shaped by Kia's unique design philosophy 'Opposites United,'" said Karim Habib, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center. "At every stage, Kia's designers have worked closely with their engineering colleagues to create a holistic solution for sustainable mobility. As a result, the EV5 sets a new standard for design, performance and practicality while providing new levels of driver enjoyment and user experience."

Cute! The Kia EV5 looks just like a mini version of the EV9

Kia’s next EV is here to take on the Tesla Model Y, the VW ID.4 and every other mid-size electric SUV

Kia knows that it’s on a bit of a design roll at the moment, so can we really blame it for taking the striking seven-seat EV9 and simply squishing it into a smaller box to create this new five-seat EV5?

The two really are remarkably similar and couldn’t be more different from the swoopy EV6, but we’re fans of the whole bunch. We’re told that the EV5 and EV9 are influenced by Kia’s ‘Bold for Nature’ design philosophy which is just one of its five ‘Opposites United’ design pillars.

And it’s mostly design details that Kia has released with the car’s reveal at the Chengdu Motor Show in China. The chunky looks are also extremely close to the EV5 Concept’s that we saw earlier this year, while the interior is almost a perfect match to the EV9’s.

We know there will be nine different exterior colour options too, with four key colours for the inside and three types of material (two ‘woven options’ and one artificial leather).

Kia's Flirting With A Bench Seat Over Here

Kia's new EV5 concept has a lot of interesting features, but one really caught our eye

Bench seats. While you can still find them in certain pickup configurations, many of us miss having the option in cars. But like white wall tires and column shifters (though those seem to be making a comeback at Mercedes and with EVs) they went the way of the Dodo. Kia just released a design that gets us at least part of the way there.

Kia released more details and images of its third EV called the EV5. It’s just a concept right now but it’s set to go on sale in China in 2024; it’s up in the air whether or not we’ll see it here in the U.S. Visually, it comes across as a smaller EV9 and certainly looks cool and techy. While the exterior design is interesting, the inside is even better.

Kia EV5 makes official debut in China

Today Kia unveiled its latest EV masterpiece, the Kia EV5. And if you think it looks familiar - that’s because the new EV5 heavily borrows on styling from its bigger sibling, the EV9. Calling the EV5 a mini EV9 you wouldn’t be wrong - although Kia’s PR team probably wouldn’t be too impressed.

The EV5 boasts a design inspired by both natural landscapes and modern architecture, according to the official press release. The term 'Tiger Face' isn't about jungle adventures but Kia's innovative design, and the EV5 flaunts it splendidly. Add to this the "Signature Star Map Lighting", and you're riding in a constellation – or at least, that's the idea. We can’t help but see the EV9 whichever way we look - but that’s not a bad thing.

Size matters in the SUV game and the EV5 finds itself at the shorter end of the scale. At 4,615 mm it is exactly 135 mm shorter than the Tesla Model Y. With its 2,750 mm wheelbase it sits right between the Model Y and the new Hyundai Kona Electric.

Kia to launch two new concept cars next week

Compact crossover and sleek saloon set to join Korean firm's fast-growing EV line-up

Kia will reveal two new electric concept cars in the form of a new compact crossover and saloon at an event in Korea next week.

The firm will stage EV Day, the first of a planned annual event to showcase its electric cars and technology, which it says will feature “three new small- to medium-sized electric models”.

It has released a teaser image showing five silhouetted models with their daytime running lights on.

This clearly shows the EV6 on the far left and EV9 on the far right, with the new Kia EV5 SUV, which was revealed in August, in the middle.

Kia has said that “detailed specifications” of the EV5 will be given at the event.

The two remaining cars take the form of a sleek saloon and a compact crossover.

The latter is the compact crossover tipped to be called the Kia EV3 that will spied testing recently and will serve as a spiritual successor to the Soul EV.

Kia is announcing three new EVs on October 12

Kia's lineup of EVs has been among the most unique and distinctive so far, and in recent times it's covered more and more of the market at various price points. The Korean company is of course set to continue launching new EVs, and we will get a glimpse of three of those next week, on October 12 to be precise.

That's when Kia EV Day is taking place, an event during which the company says it will announce its future EV vision along with a new model lineup. Specifically, it will present three new small to medium sized EVs, with keynote speakers expected to introduce these as well as Kia's future plans.

Kia EV3 Concept

The Kia Concept EV3 represents the brand's vision for an electric compact CUV that effortlessly blends practicality with the sheer joy of driving. It offers users the technology, practicality and design of Kia's flagship SUV, the EV9, in a compact and accessible form. While those qualities might seem incompatible to some, delivering creative, groundbreaking design solutions by fusing seemingly contrasting sources lies at the heart of Kia's 'Opposites United' design philosophy. In the case of the Concept EV3, Kia's designers have drawn a high degree of inspiration from the 'Joy for Reason' pillar of the design philosophy.

"Joy can be seen as the antithesis of reason. One is a positive, emotional response, and the other is derived from logic. When the two are combined, though, their contrasting qualities merge into a powerful and highly impactful design," Karim Habib, Executive Vice President, and Head of Kia Global Design Center, said. "With the Concept EV3, the 'Joy for Reason' influence is evident in the contrasting qualities of a robust body combined with a dynamic silhouette. In addition, the unexpected treatment of volumes and graphics simultaneously interlock with each other, creating a logical yet emotional design."

The design treatment of the cabin, with the windscreen pushed forward and the long sloping roofline, creates a unique silhouette. The robust architecture of the squared wheel arches, cut with asymmetrical angles, results in an unexpected logic and a strong impression. This, in turn, is contrasted by the wrap-around windscreen and disconnected C pillar, which link the glasshouse surfaces and give the roof a floating effect.

Inside, the Concept EV3 blends exceptional practicality with transformative cabin ambience and design. As with the vehicles' exterior, the 'Joy for Reason' pillar plays a fundamental influencing role, merging seemingly opposing values to execute a precise product design language, resulting in a cabin that feels joyful to travel in, while providing ample space to support an active lifestyle once occupants reach their destination.

Kia EV4 Concept

The Concept EV4 represents the purity of the 'Power to Progress' pillar of the 'Opposites Untied' design philosophy. 'Power to Progress' focuses on the skills, expertise and creativity developed during Kia's recent era of design-led transformation. This approach fuels the creation of innovative products that transcend the establishment of new standards for individual vehicle design to redefine entire sectors. Such is the case with the Kia Concept EV4.

Its four-door format might suggest it should be categorised as a saloon. However, the model's potent and impactful lines represent not just another saloon, but an entirely new type of EV saloon that stands as a symbol of innovation.

Inspired by the 'Power to Progress' and manifested through a harmonious fusion of confident, geometric diagonal character lines and rich yet technical surfaces, the Concept EV4 represents a new value, approach, customer experience, and typology. Aspects such as the evocative sleek low nose, the elongated, dynamic long-tail silhouette, and the technical roof spoiler, all attributes reminiscent of sports and racing cars, affirm the EV4's status as an entirely new type of EV saloon.

An aggressive facial impression complements the Concept EV4's progressive, technological silhouette. Featuring a wide, imposing stance, with headlamps located vertically at the extreme outer edges of the hood and front bumper, the model further symbolises the brand's determination to push boundaries and accelerate the EV Revolution.
