Coastal core is a sham. they do not cover 100% when admitted to hospital in places like Johannesburg
Rather go for discovery classic smart an as @SauRoNZA suggested get gap cover with stratum.
-Discover Classic smart covers 200%
-Has day to day benefits ie. GP visits (R60 co payment), dental, optometrist, specialist visit's etc, Partial gynecologist consultation cover.
Best bang for you buck imo
Why Stratum?
Erm…because you need to live at the coast.

I'm still very curious as to how this works for the scheme. What is it about the coastal risk pool that makes it cheaper?
Oxygen being forced into your cells (see atmospheric pressure) while listening to the calming sounds of the waves ...What is it about the coastal risk pool that makes it cheaper?
Another benefit that Stratum has - If your child falls sick and has to go to the ER on a weekend then you can claim the consultation fee back. Stratum also covers certain contraceptive implants. basicly if you visit a Gyne Discovery and Stratum covers mostly everything. They fit well together.
My wife was diagnosed with lymes disease and rickettsia.Something to bear in mind though they still only cover an accident in ER for most plans and not sickness/disease.
Read those sections VERY carefully.
My wife was diagnosed with lymes disease and rickettsia.
She fell ill 2 days after arriving back in SA from Amsterdam. Our medical aid covered everything treating the disease for 14 days in hospital to lumber punches etc. We are on the classic smart plan.
Edit* she was admitted into hospital after going to the ER.
Correct. The coastal package also does not cover ER unless you have a savings account then of which the bill gets deducted from. Regardless you still end up paying for the account whether it os out of pocket or from your medical savings.Yes if you are admitted then it’s no longer an ER visit but a hospital visit which is all the difference.
But if you are only in ER and sent home then it’s for your account and then the gap cover has very specific conditions based on each plan.

Most plans cover an emergency room visit as long as it is an actual emergency. There is no requirement to be admitted to hospital.Correct. If you join after 35, then you pay more.Get yourself on medical aid before you are 30 or you will always pay more from then on when you do join.
We find the Classic Smart plan better than the coastal options. Why not the Discovery Classic / Essential Smart plans?

Or if it turns out to be a PMB, but that will only be after the fact, and some paperwork. You are correct, though. One will have to pay upfront at casualty once you've given them your medical aid card etc. Most plans don’t cover the emergency room.
They pay it out of MSA.
You have to be admitted for it to come off the plan.
