Legend.

Why is a multi-billion dollar company like NYT so stingy?
It's not a case of being stingy. The old blue checks were there to verify that an account was verified as being legitimate, ie authenticity. Now that anyone can buy a checkmark, there's no verification that any account is legitimate.

Why should they pay for one when @nytlmes, @newyorktimes, and @nytmes can be "verified" too?

Exactly! And people think Musk is a genius. I feel sad for the investors who lent him the $$ to buy that lemon.

Didn't Musk say that the old blue tick would stay with this new one more of a paid promotion where your posts would be promoted to near the top?

There was an easy middle ground
Keep verified as is and add a VIP/premium model with bonus features
Don't play chicken with people who don't need you

Twitter was literally on the path to doing that pre musk. Subscription included the ability to edit and make longer tweets.

Wrong. Because you have to pay for it it is sufficient proof that it is a real person linked to a bank account. That is the best verification you are going to get on the internet.

It is just no longer a status symbol. So leftist all over who like to pretend they believe in equality is upset when they lose their status symbols. Shame. They'll cry over it for a week or two and then just give in.

Don't know what your point is with the obvious misspellings of nytimes. So what if someone else can also create a twitter account? If a fake imitation actually does better than the real business then it isn't twitters fault.

Old twitter also sold verification marks. It was just more expensive.
