Google Drive has a secret file limit

Google Drive has implemented a 5-million item limit for all users, making it impossible for some to upload new files despite not having run out of capacity on their Google One or Google Workspace storage plans.

Ars Technica reports confused users first flagged the issue in February 2023. They could not understand why they encountered "Upload Failed" errors when adding more files to their Google Drive.

Makes not much sense for large users who are subbed to the 20tb option. Easy to have millions of files using that, maybe they should increase the file count as you go up on tiers...

Boom! Throttled..

Lol... more like account deleted with all content. Seen quite a few people complaining about it. Not worth it making use of these storage / "cloud" providers.

What 20TB option? For one user on their highest enterprise package, you only get 5TB. After that it is US$300 per month for every 10TB. And this becomes more expensive after every 10TB you need more. Even though Google advertises "Unlimited storage" as much as you need, they do clarify in the FUP the maximum limit is 5TB and they could allow you additional storage if they see it fit, but that hardly happens and you need to pay up for more.

WTF Google?! I have tons of projects backed up on Google Drive and must be pretty close to the 5 million file limit already :crying: Guess I'm going to be buying some more external harddrives now.

Google warned me that I was about to hit my 5TB limit. Told me I had to delete files or pay up US$300 per month for an additional 10TB.

10TB is not merely enough for me. So, I ended spending almost R15k buying me 2x 16TB HDDs. Now using one for my media and the other as a backup from a different location. So, now have my own small cloud setup up and running too. Have already made back the R15k after 3 months of not having to pay Google.

Just figured, instead of paying Google US$300 per month for 10TB storage, I may just as well buy 2x 16TB every 3 months instead. Or, simply end up buying my next two drives early next year and saving myself about R49k in the process.

You not saving if you don't have the money in the first place. ;)

In all fairness, if you are struggling with money, you should not be in possession, own or play with things like computers, laptops, cellphones, Internet connections, media files, movies, series, music, games, mobile phones, etc., in the first place. Do your debt first. Find a better paying job. Save up and then start looking at these unnecessary luxuries. So, there is that too.
