Google quietly implements 5 million-item limit in Drive

WTF Google?! I have tons of projects backed up on Google Drive and must be pretty close to the 5 million file limit already :crying: Guess I'm going to be buying some more external harddrives now.
No chance of archiving/zipping some of your older projects to bring down that file limit?

Google warned me that I was about to hit my 5TB limit. Told me I had to delete files or pay up US$300 per month for an additional 10TB.

10TB is not merely enough for me. So, I ended spending almost R15k buying me 2x 16TB HDDs. Now using one for my media and the other as a backup from a different location. So, now have my own small cloud setup up and running too. Have already made back the R15k after 3 months of not having to pay Google.

Just figured, instead of paying Google US$300 per month for 10TB storage, I may just as well buy 2x 16TB every 3 months instead. Or, simply end up buying my next two drives early next year and saving myself about R49k in the process.
So 0 redundancy, on a single drive with average seek times above 20ms.
That's a completely different use-case than cloud storage back-ups, which are offsite with redundancy handled by them.

As usual, dumb comparison by rvZA, all you proved was that you didn't actually test what your own use-case was, and then you also went with probably one of the worst/most cheapskate solutions you could have.

99% of people needing this type of storage for movies, series, music and other files do not care about this. Crazy to think you have to pay R5.3k a month to get 10TB storage at Google just going to sleep at night knowing "redundancy is handled by someone else"

No thanks.

Happy Snappers all over the world are having panic attacks now ...
Especially those of us who pay.

Edit: ...but 5 million is a lot.

10Tb is R799 a month.

We tend to backup all our Call Recordings(historic) so clearly will end up using multiple accounts. Got the space it is just the file limit that is becoming the problem

Google Drive has a secret file limit

Google Drive has implemented a 5-million item limit for all users, making it impossible for some to upload new files despite not having run out of capacity on their Google One or Google Workspace storage plans.

Ars Technica reports confused users first flagged the issue in February 2023. They could not understand why they encountered "Upload Failed" errors when adding more files to their Google Drive.
How much physical space does the Internet & Digital practices have constructed with equipment included as a whole on the planet, to accommodate how much duplications of the same news etc etc etc, and how much power over the globe does the complete internet and IT systems ideology consumes today, and how many resources are "burned" doing this, and can we afford this explotion in the long run before something unexpected gives-?

It's been rolled back:

We recently rolled out a system update to Drive item limits to preserve stability and optimize performance. While this impacted only a small number of people, we are rolling back this change as we explore alternate approaches to ensure a great experience for all.

Damn I think it will be worse now... This concerns me "as we explore alternate approaches to ensure a great experience for all."

Who stores movies, series and music anymore, cloud or otherwise? The world has moved on since 2005, unfortunately rvza hasn't...

In other words, we took our chances, people are pissed, so to save face we are rolling back and we will screw you over in another way instead.

Dam. Was wondering why my porn collection kept giving me capacity errors.
