Young man (18) from Mpumalanga dies while readying generator for load-shedding

sad.

We have no idea if that was the actual cause. In any case someone determined enough can make their own by splicing two plugs together.

The 'old' standard SA 3 pin plugs with exposed conductors are not particularly safe, and should only be inserted into extension sockets when the power is switched off. See:

ive shocked myself so many times on these plugs, ive learned to switch it off at the wall now... mostly.. lol

ive seen a lot of people running a simple pnp extension cord with multiplugs into the house from their generators, tragedy waiting to happen

Actually the opposite should happen. Proper switchover plugs should be sold with fuses and ground fault protection built in.

Them being illegal is what causes the problem.
There are proper switchover units you can buy from the store.

You cant blame ANC for stupidity. Blame the parents for breeding.
Seems like we can safely blame your parents for adding some stupidity to society

And you think someone who thinks all of this is much hullabaloo over nothing will be bothered enough to buy a proper thing?

Specialty shops do stock them.
It has nothing to do with things not being available, have you ever seen the condition of those extension cords being used by generator people? If someone cannot buy a good, properly rated extension cord to do the suicide thing with, why would they even care there is a proper component to do things safely?

The proper thing is barely advertised.

The ideal scenario would be that these cables are sold in the same places as generators.

Same configuration as used in Iran.

The ideal scenario would be for the ANC government to do the job they collect salaries and bonuses for. Provide stable electricity. That way very few people would use generators. They would likely be trained in their proper use as they would be a big deal. In addition there is a lack of respect of proper authority which means younger people and the less educated don't care about regulations and think of them either with contempt because of past oppression and everything old is bad, or because they're ignorant. Hence such things can happen.
But the authorities are ultimately to blame because they don't provide power and force people to buy generators and use them, people who don't really have the training to be able to use them.

I guess that would not hurt for the small percentage who want to do things right and are skilled enough to do the wiring. But I would think the whole thing should be done by an electrician and be CoCed, so an electrician can sort all that out, will know what needs to be bought and where.

So the generator shop can sell the stuff, maybe as a wiring harness package with all the necessary protection and switchgear, that will only be solving half of the problem.

Yep. Worst case scenario is the cable running through puddles of water.
