In many ways he was an odd fellow much like Smuts.... not easy to peg down and intensely hated at home.It seems De Gaulle resisted the US harder than the French people themselves did.

He had by contemporaries been described as not being a bad or unintelligent man but an unwise one.Smuts was not all he was made out to be.

if De Gaulle was anything like the airport named after him then good riddance to the vile POS!In many ways he was an odd fellow much like Smuts.... not easy to peg down and intensely hated at home.
Little poodle yaps trying to improve his single digit approval rating.
Does he think the US nukes all over europe are there for his "protection"
Literally the only thing I like about France. Why? France has its own independent nuclear forces:
France is the only member of the European Union to possess independent (non-NATO) nuclear weapons. France was the fourth country to test an independently developed nuclear weapon, doing so in 1960 under the government of Charles de Gaulle. The French military is currently thought to retain a weapons stockpile of around 300 operational (deployed) nuclear warheads, making it the third-largest in the world, speaking in terms of warheads, not megatons.

yup, not sure wtf he's on about, Europe has been USA's bitch for decades already
"becoming America's followers" doesn't fit the picture, maybe relevant for some of North & East Europe irrationally jonesing to cast off the shackles of neutrality and join the US military spending club called NATO
but certainly most of Europe and most definitely France has had that star spangled ball-gag in their mouths for decades

They always try to have their own systems and structure, even if it is half-assed most of the time.
The french part of my ancestry both agrees and disagrees with you.
I will say this for them, it's a good thing to eat healthy bread instead of the putty garbage on our shelves.

I literally cannot digest the garbage anymore, all I can actually eat is the "health" bread..... because it's actual bread and even then I have to look for the one with the least amount of sugar in it.That was maybe in the 80s. Now it's the same puffy garbage everywhere.
Interesting documentary:While he had a brilliant mind, Smuts was unpopular with his countrymen because of his conciliatory attitude toward the English. His failure to reprieve Jopie Fourie – a ABW hero executed after his participation in the Boer rebellion of 1914-1915 made him few friends in South Africa.
A very interesting read is "Jan Smuts - wie en wat was hy eintlik" by Dr Paul Grobbelaar. Smuts was not all he was made out to be.
I believe you have finally lost your mind. And so the whole world defeated by communism... how clever these chaps were!
Plot twist, Communism was merely the transitory system on the road to Technocracy. And so the whole world defeated by communism... how clever these chaps were!
