'Better under Apartheid": The desperate lament of Soweto’s poor and fearful elderly

Do you mean these now old, old people voting for the ANC that now ignores them?
A lot of things, don't get me wrong there are a couple of valid concerns there that are a challenge to many other communities, but Sowetans have a massive entitlement problem they need to deal with, there are places in South Africa that are in a much worse state than Soweto economically, infrastructure wise and in any way you can ever imagine but they still have a sense of pride in doing the right thing, only failed by government.

Soweto had everything that other black people could only dream about, for perspective my village only got electricity in 2000, but many of those areas who had nothing have overtaken them in terms of quality of life they built for themselves while grown men and women in Soweto still fight for the National Party's 4 roomed house their parents left behind, with no one wanting to move out and start their own life.

Grown men stay in backrooms behind their grandparents houses and refuse to pay for electricity while driving expensive cars. Yes those old people are let down by the government but they are also being let down by their own children, just look at this,

“I come here every day to sell my fruits and vegetables, on rainy days or not. There is nothing I can do because I have to provide for my family. I can’t enjoy the SASSA money. I have to feed my grandchildren with it.
Where are the parents of the grandchildren? Probably wearing expensive wigs on the children's grants

What about this?

“In the old government, they used to check cracked walls and leaking roofs, and the fences were fixed if they were not in good condition. Look at the houses of the old government, the walls are still standing strong.

The government must come and fix the house while there are grown men in the yard? The mentality is totally wrong, yes the government can do a lot better but the reason Sowetans are feeling like the poorest people in the whole of South Africa is because of the entitlement, those old people cannot get registered as indigent and get help because of the young people who are a stumbling block to progress.

They do have the power to change things, it's a democracy, the nonsense of black people are oppressing us and white people were better is also rubbish, that's why they feel it's better to just sit and not vote, instead of voting for somebody if they feel the current government is not serving them.

You raise many many valid points without a doubt, the problem is way way bigger than just the fscked government, but the fscked government exacerbates these problems to a stratospheric level.

I can assure you they can get a different government who does things a lot better than the ANC and they will still find something to rebel about, if you can take all the able bodied, lazy, drug addicted young people out of the equation the life of those old people can be way better.

The municipality can give them free electricity so that their food goes a long way, the grandchildren who must be fed will be someone else's problem, maybe the government can even fix the cracks and the fence.

The NP was good in a way because when they built a hospital they did not allow illegal immigrants to occupy it, even the domestic jobs they are talking about would still be there, so yes, the ANC failed them in that regard, even the criminality would be reduced.

The young lowlifes should all unite behind Nhlanhla Lux and make their Soweto better.

Without a doubt, but a "functioning" government will be able to make inroads into employment stats, economic growth, law enforcement etc... and yes it will be a slow and arduous journey but it will eventually improve the lot of everyones life.

It is utter madness that young people get away with that! Living in the back of your parents, driving fancy cars and trying to live the Instagram lifestyle whilst claiming poverty is disgraceful. The drive to live a meaningful life seems to have evaporated into the drive to life the instagram lifestyle.

Hopefully the youth don't demand that the jobs be given to them merely because they are from Soweto or they stop the factory from operating, be very careful of people who thrive in a state of lawlessness. They look like the type who would tell you life under the ANC was better when another party has taken over.

I genuinely feel bad for the old people, but I have totally no faith in the young ones.

No more banana vans

Amazingly, even the old SAP get some credit.

Back then those yellow police vans were police service only… today you will find police vans playing loud music, and the police showing off. Today you find police drunk on duty, dancing in a uniform.

“Police don’t have that dignity that the old police had. If they find you walking at night they rob you. Every day on the radio, television, and in newspapers police did something bad. They don’t respect the oath they took.

I have long ago realised that the problem isn't related to color of skin - the biggest problem SA's populace has is a general lack of pride in themselves and the work they do.

It is rare to hear of a public servant that is genuinely proud of their work and goes above and beyond to ensure a service is delivered. They are more likely to take pride in their look than in their work.

I'm not buying what they're selling

It's about time they accepted some personal responsibility for their lives

Agree. Told a Afrikaner contractor the other day that if he did this work at my home i'd tell him to pack up and fokof.

and that would be where functioning law enforcement comes into play that would prevent that sort of action.

I think it was @ToxicBunny that had the contractor that messed up his pool area. Also read horror stories of @SAguy that had contractors mess up the renovations at their house...it most definitely isn't just with public servants.

Just barely good enough seems to be the work ethic of late across the board!

It was me... and it was an Afrikaaner contractor who got told to fsck off from my site.

And his work ethic doesn't even qualify as barely good enough, that twat absolutely fscked the installation up to the point that its cost me R40k to have the pool pulled out of the ground and reinstalled.

It's not a racial thing either, there were plenty of black workers in councils, govt departments etc that took pride in their jobs and worked to make life better for those who they served.

The problem is a breakdown in that culture of public service.

And 100s of human right organizations, political parties the media and a whole lot of know it alls who would find something wrong with how the law is being enforced. The same Sowetans will turn against the new government, revolt, vandalize and tell you life was better under the ANC.

Just look at how people complain that the EFF is causing chaos in Parliament but John will stand up and want to complain about some irrelevant nonsense when the cops throw them out.

People don't see the irony of praising policing of the National Party while not acknowledging those guys could get away with pretty much anything, now some criminal resists arrest, you give the lowlife a few stomps on the head, they die because they are weak and then you have issues.

Such a shyte show really :(

Makes me so mad that our senior citizens are treated the way they are... just a small amount of humanity and this wouldn't be such an issue.
Then again, come the next election our people wear their yellow t shirts and drag the family along to proudly vote for their No. 1.

I feel sorry for the Elderly who has invested a lot in this country and their children and those who tried making a difference, but is not considered as part of the our people.

Dark, very dark times ahead of us.
