Russia eyes digital draft as Ukraine war losses mount

Russia plans to introduce electronic military draft papers in an effort to make it harder for men to avoid being called up to fight in Ukraine.

The State Duma, the lower chamber of parliament, approved the necessary legislation in two separate votes at lightning speed on Tuesday with near unanimity.

Under the new proposals, summons will be sent electronically to a potential draftee’s personal account on the main government portal. They would be considered delivered as soon as delivered electronically. Under the legislation, citizens who fail to show up at the military enlistment office will be automatically banned from travelling abroad and face a raft of other restrictions to complicate their lives inside Russia.
The new draft regime will close numerous loopholes exploited by draft dodgers and give Russia the organisational infrastructure to carry out a much more thorough and wider mobilisation campaign – if and when it decides to do so.

Some politicians complained the changes were rushed through without giving them enough time for scrutiny. But Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of the lower house, urged parliamentarians to avoid “sabotaging” the readings.

Sputnik Op-Ed:

Since their appearance in the Donbass, Russia’s ‘heavy flamethrower’ thermobaric artillery quickly gained a reputation for their ability to inflict devastating damage against enemy fortifications, vehicles and anyone unfortunate enough to find themselves in their zone of fire. Where do these weapons originate and how do they work? Sputnik explains.

Here is the the thing, they are not being ideological and no one has ever accused them of being ideological.... you are interpreting it as being ideological. This particular threat of neo-nazis in Ukraine is a problem for them because instead of hating Jews these people hate Russians. They are being practical but dressing it up in ideology to better sell it.

Everything about this war of aggression is ideological for them. At its core is imperialism driven by nationalism; the reuniting/reclaiming of claimed lost territories and the fight against an existential threat to their people. The narrative has been Ukraine and Ukranian identity specifically does not exist. It is land to be reclaimed, people to be saved and others to be ''rewired'' in to being Russian again (schools in occupied territories stamp out Ukranian and Ukrainian history and only teach Russian and Russian history, as an example.)

‘I’m flying over the black Ukrainian land that Russian tanks are crossing, righting the monstrous injury committed against Russian history in 1991 ... Today we are being reunited with Ukraine once again’ - Aleksandr Prokhanov

It's the 1930s all over again. A hyper-nationalist state is using perceived historical injustices and territorial losses along with the existential threat of another group of people for grounds to go to war.

It's outright hilarious how people are being openly racist here.... the same people generally that are often supposedly anti-racist.

Tolkien's orcs represent the worst of humanity as he himself experienced this through his own involvement in war. Pro-Russians want the moral high ground but baulk when the savage and barbarous nature of their actions are highlighted. They are dehumanising themselves with every war crime and atrocity they commit. They are reaping what they sow.

Or maybe Pushkin is not as good as he is claimed to be. Maybe if you read his works you'd find a lot of polemical demagoguery.

You know, for some scholars and experts, maybe Goebbels' speeches are probably also worth preserving. Maybe even worth listening to and being taken by the power of the language. They could also be masterpieces.

For me, Pushkins work is worth preserving, as is Goebbels... all history is worth preserving and learning from, but at the same time that doesn't mean a place should keep memorials/statues to people that don't actually mean anything to the country/place (and yes I know this stance is potentially problematic with the attitude of removing statues in SA in relation to the evil whiteman but there is complexity and nuance in all things)

Yes and? They already hated the Russians before or the civil war would not have started.

Oh ok you subscribe to the only those with power can be racist woke nonsense?

Not a dilemma since I never said it was not depraved.... read what I wrote again. I suppose half the trouble here is I tend to write concisely often carrying multiple contrasting but non-contradictory meanings in a single sentence.... and the audience as it is cherry picks meaning.
Sure this doesnt fit you ?
