New York woman shot, killed by homeowner after car she was in pulled into wrong driveway

Protect your property at all costs. I would shoot too if an unknown car parked in my driveaway.
Do this in SA and you are going to jail, for culpable homicide, maybe, if the prosecutor is good, murder.
Even confirmed by a SA judge some time ago. You won't invite them in for coffee first.
Let me get this right, are you saying that a SA court said you could shoot first and then ask questions?

...it is his responsibility to board it up and keep people out.

That's not really how it works though, you leaving your front door open doesn't give anybody the right to enter your house.

Not always, one example is Vleis Visagie that shot and killed his own daughter thinking criminals were stealing the car. Nothing happened to him as no punishment would trump him having to live with himself knowing he killed his own daughter.

Then there's the guy that shot his own kid through the door, at the time the house was being invaded though.

Justification for killing someone in SA is quite complex and is almost always judged case to case basis. The Visagie one the NPA was quite lenient. Based on my knowledge of facts if the NPA did decide to prosecute he would most likely be found guilty.

If what happened in NY, took place in SA, then that homeowner would be prosecuted.

So how do you ring the doorbell/intercom without getting shot if the doorbell/intercom is located inside the property? American houses typically do not have an intercom located on the perimeter of the property.

I always used to wonder about delivery companies just leaving parcels outside the front door in the States. After seeing stories like this, it's not nearly as suprising.
