Volvo’s Polestar brand

2023 Polestar 4 is rakish coupé-SUV with up to 537bhp

Fourth Polestar car targets rivals from BMW and Porsche with focus on maximising range

The fourth car from Sino-Swedish brand Polestar has been revealed as “the reinvention of the SUV coupé” and will enter the premium crossover segment to take on the Porsche Macan.

Arriving, notably, without a rear window, the Polestar 4 joins the recently unveiled Polestar 3 SUV as the firm’s first bespoke offerings, in contrast to the Volvo-based design roots of its first two models, the 1 and 2.

Like the £78,900 Polestar 3, the rakish, electric-powered 4 is positioned as a premium model to rival the likes of Porsche, BMW and Genesis. As such, it will command a price of between £50,000 and £65,000, depending on whether a single- or dual-motor powertrain is chosen.

A focus on maximum range has shaped the design, according to head of Polestar design Maximilian Missoni. This is due to the positioning of the header rail, which most cars have and is sited around the rear roof area to add rigidity and strength to the vehicle’s structure.

The rail’s position is pivotal: lower it too much to ensure a slippery vehicle and the rail impedes head room, but keep it high for more interior space and it impacts performance by affecting aerodynamics.

Polestar’s solution for the 4, which is based on Volvo/Polestar’s largely aluminium PMA platform, is to both lower the header and move it behind the rear passengers’ heads. Doing so sites the header rail where the rear window would normally be, so a roof-mounted camera now aids rear visibility in lieu of the rear glass. The 4’s drag coefficient is a slippery 0.269. The Tesla Model S’s, for comparison, is 0.208.

Polestar 4 is a $60,000 SUV with 544hp and 600km range

Polestar is on a mission to change our perceptions of what a coupe is. It started with the Polestar 3which is called an SUV but when you look at its dimensions, you realize it’s a wagon on stilts. The all-new Polestar 4 takes this approach even further - it’s nearly as long as the Polestar 3, but it’s even lower and the company calls it a Performance SUV Coupe.

Polestar is hell-bent on improving passenger comfort and that’s never a bad thing. It can be hard to achieve though in a coupe SUV, these cars are always a compromise between the sexy shape and interior room at the back. The company claims that the new Polestar 4 fixes that problem and “celebrates rear occupant comfort.”

How did the Polestar do it? Apparently by removing the rear window. We struggle to see how the window is keeping the rear room from getting bigger, but we'll tag along with this one. Turns out the real issue with having the window in the back is the frame of the vehicle - the rear cross brace has to sit right above the rear passengers’ heads to allow for the glass to be installed. If you remove the glass, you can push the cross brace further back, making more headroom without sacrificing the coupe lines. Clever Polestar!

To compensate for the lack of a rear window, Polestar 4 comes with a larger glass roof that stretches behind the rear passengers, flooding the interior with light and making the rear window redundant. The company cleverly used lighter colors as well and the trim behind the rear seats rises and runs above the headrests where it meets with the black roof liner. The rear seats feel like a comfy cocoon and nobody even asks about the missing window.

Polestar 4 Has No Rear Window to Make It Safer, Says Polestar

The new Polestar 4 has no rear window to increase headroom for passengers, among other reasons; it uses a rear-mounted camera instead.

Polestar is on a bit of a roll right now, after wowing car fans with its Preceptconcept and the Polestar 6 convertible that could be on sale in 2026. Now, as it prepares to launch the Polestar 3 in the U.S., the Swedish automaker has unveiled yet another new model, but it’s missing something pretty integral to most modern cars.

Imaginatively called the Polestar 4, the new EV is described as a “performance SUV coupé” by Polestar. It sits in the middle of the range between the 2 and 3 in terms of size, price and even styling. The front end has an air of the 3 about it, while the profile and rear quarter look more like the 2.

Polestar 3 electric SUV makes first UK appearance at Salon Privé

First blank-sheet design by Polestar is an SUV that looks to take on the BMW iX and Jaguar I-Pace

The new Polestar 3 made its first public appearance in the UK at Salon Privé in London as the firm's first SUV sporting up to 510bhp, a host of advanced safety features and extensive use of sustainable materials - claiming this makes the SUV "more relevant and responsible".

It made its UK debut on the Polestar stand in long range dual motor guise, sporting 'Snow' white paintwork and 22in four-spoke forged alloys.

Pitted as a direct rival to the BMW iX and Jaguar I-Pace, it is the second series-production model from the Volvo spin-off brand after the Polestar 2 electric saloon.

Based on the advanced new SPA2 platform, it's effectively twinned with the forthcoming Volvo EX90, using much of the same underpinning technology and systems. But while the Polestar 1 and 2 were based on Volvo concept cars, the 3 is the first car designed from conception as a Polestar.

Although it's a large SUV, its rakish design shows a clear focus on aerodynamic efficiency, with a relatively sleek silhouette and a number of aero-channeling additions.

Polestar boss favours character over range for electric cars

Designer turned CEO Thomas Ingenlath questions importance of efficiency and highlights “brilliant new ideas”

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath says he would trade away some of an electric car's efficiency and range to ensure it has a unique visual identity.

In a keynote speech at the Financial Times Future of the Car Conference in London, he asked: “Do we all have to be the weltmeister [champion] of efficiency? Do we all have to strive for the longest and the best range?

“I think, to a certain degree, for a certain character of the car, you might actually give [away] that one or two kilometres of range in order to give you a brand identity.

Volvo EX90 and Polestar 3 production delayed until 2024 due to software issues

Volvo and Polestar have some bad news today. Both the Volvo EX90 and the Polestar 3 are delayed. While production for both was supposed to start in 2023, it's now been pushed to the first quarter of 2024 (which means January to March).

Polestar says it was "recently informed that additional time for final software development of the new all-electric platform shared by Volvo Cars is needed".

Volkswagen has had its fair share of software-related issues, and now it seems like Volvo and Polestar are unfortunately experiencing their own.

According to Volvo's press release on the matter, the "EX90 is a very exciting and important car for Volvo Cars, representing the start of a new era for the company and introduces a new generation of technology - hardware and software".

This $450,000 Polestar Boat Could Be Ready Before The Polestar 3

The Swedish EV maker expects the boat to go on sale in 2024.

Polestar, the small-time EV maker with big plans wants to get in on the luxury boating game. The company has announced that, through a partnership with fellow Swedish eclectic boat manufacturer Candela, it is launching an electric boat. It’s not just a concept either; you’ll be able to actually buy this thing — if you can afford it.

The boat is based on Candela’s C-8 model and is called of course the C-8 Polestar Edition. On the outside, keen-eyed individuals will be able to tell it’s a Polestar edition thanks to a special gray exterior paint (the only color you can choose by the way; when did gray become Polestar’s official color?). Underneath, the boat’s hydrofoils are painted in the same gold color that adorns performance versions of the Polestar 2’s seatbelts and adjustable Öhlins dampers.

You can now watch dogs do silly things in your Polestar 2 after OTA YouTube update

Update ‘P2.9’ also gets better range assistant app. But really: silly dog videos galore

Polestar has announced an incredibly serious and important update. A new remote software upgrade for the Polestar 2 means owners can now watch YouTube in their cars via an integrated app.

Which of course can only mean one thing: silly dog videos galore!

Heck, even Polestar’s Big Boss knows how important dog videos are to its customers. “We know how much our customers look forward to over-the-air upgrades and I am convinced this one will be well received, with notable new features and enhancements,” Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO said. He may have been talking about the OTA update in general, but we're running with Silly Dog Vids.

Said new features and enhancements include the addition of the YouTube app (which of course you can only access while parked), plus an update to Polestar’s Range Assistant feature. The latter is said to get a revised algorithm for more accurate range prediction, and the ability to let drivers monitor their energy consumption over the previous 20, 40 or 100 miles.

Polestar 2 gets an update with YouTube, Apple Maps and Range Assistant improvements

Polestar 2 is now receiving its fifteenth OTA update, bringing its software to version P2.9. Polestar 2s all around the world are getting the update, with some limitations in South Korea and China. These two countries won't be getting the native YouTube app, which ships with the update elsewhere. The latter also brings the native Apple Maps app to CarPlay and improves the Range Assistant app.

Of course, the YouTube app will only work when the car is parked. The Apple CarPlay also gains Apple Maps improvements. In addition, CarPlay gets one extra phone integration, media information on the home screen, handling of calls directly from the steering wheel controls and call screens and Apple Maps are both available on the driver's display.

The 2024 Polestar 2 Is A Little More Expensive But Also Much More Powerful

For an additional $1,500, the base Polestar 2 Long Range now has 68 more horsepower and can go 50 miles further on a charge.

Polestar has announced pricing for the 2024 incarnation of the high-riding pseudo-sedan it calls the Polestar 2, and it’s predictably more expensive than last year’s model. That’s pretty much par for the course in the car business. The difference is, it’s also significantly better, which is rarer to see.

The base Polestar 2 — the single-motor, long-range version — now starts at $49,990 before a $1,400 destination charge. That’s $1,500 higher than the 2023 model year. However, it also has 68 more horsepower thanks to a new motor and can go 50 miles further when fully juiced up, thanks to a larger battery. I’d reckon that’s worth a $1,500 premium.

2024 Polestar 2 US pricing announced

The 2024 Polestar 2 was officially unveiled in January but the availability and US pricing were missing from the announcement. At the time, the company only unveiled the European version and only shared the pricing info for the European market. That changes today and the really good news is that there is a way to get a full €7,000 federal EV tax credit for the Polestar 2.

Starting with the entry model for the US market, Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor starts at €46,500. The 220 kW (299 hp) electric motor works in tandem with the 82 kWh battery - the result is an updated EPA rating of 515 km and 0 to 97 km/h time of 5.9 seconds. Blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, and steer assist with brake support are all standard now, as well as a 360-degree camera system, parking sensors, and auto-dimming mirrors.
