Hyundai Ioniq

What’s it like to drift the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N?

TG journeys to the Arctic Circle to sample a new flavour of 600bhp powerslide

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N isn’t finished. The whoosh and warble noises it’ll pump into the cabin aren’t finalised yet. The bodywork is hidden under a garish shrink-wrapped disguise. Inside there’s a sporty new steering wheel and sporty bucket seats which I can’t tell you about.

And what’s the range? Well, given it’s about minus three Celsius and Hyundai hasn’t calibrated that bit of the on-board computer yet, I really can’t say to within 100 miles how far an Ioniq 5 N goes between charges.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 crowned World Car Of The Year

Electric sedan picks up awards in three categories as Lucid, Citroen and Kia also bagging gongs

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 has won the 2023 World Car of the Year Award, announced at the New York motor show on Thursday.

The sleek electric saloon took the top honours in the converted award from a short list of three finalists that included the BMW X1/iX1 and Kia Niro.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 succeeds the Hyundai Ioniq 5 as the World Car Of The Year. It also took the top spot in two other categories.

Founded in 2003, the World Car Of The Year Awards consists of seven categories, with winners announced in differing car classes, including Electric, Luxury, Performance and Urban. There are also separate World Car Design and World Car Person Of The Year awards.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 also took the top spot in the 2023 World Electric Car, coming in ahead of the BMW i7 and Lucid Air.

In the 2023 World Luxury Car category, the Lucid Air beat competition from the Genesis G90 and BMW 7-series/i7.

The Kia EV6 GT won the 2023 World Performance Car award against finalists that included the Nissan Z and Toyota GR Corolla.

2023 marked the first time no European performance car was represented among the three finalists for the World Performance Car award.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 Wins WCOTY 2023

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 has cleaned up at the 2023 World Car of the Year awards, claiming the overall title as well as two other categories.

The curiously-styled Hyundai Ioniq 6 has bagged the overall World Car of the Year award, along with the World Car Design of the Year and World Electric Vehicle Award.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 saw off the BMW X1 and Kia Niro for the overall title, and the Korean brand has claimed back to back victories after the Hyundai Ioniq 5 won in 2022.

“We are thrilled to receive this prestigious honor two years in a row, which recognizes the tremendous talents and unrelenting efforts of everyone at Hyundai Motor Company to bring EVs like Ioniq 6 to market,” said Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 takes the 2023 World Car of the Year award

Hyundai has done it again. Last year it was the Ioniq 5 that got the World Car of the Year title, and now it is the turn of the new Ioniq 6. And yet both couldn’t be more different - the Ioniq 6 didn’t follow the design of the Ioniq 5, and the cars are so different they don’t look like they were made by the same manufacturer.

During the 2023 New York Auto Show that’s taking place right now, Ioniq 6 was given first the World Design Car and World Electric Vehicle awards, to eventually receive the overall title of the 20023 World Car of the Year. But that wasn’t the end of awards for the Hyundai Group - the Kia EV6 GT was given the title of 2023 World Performance Car.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 went up against BMW iX1/X1 duo, and Kia Niro was shortlisted as well. BMW i7 and Lucid Air were up for the World Electric Vehicle award and Ioniq 6 took it away from them. Lucid Air and Range Rover were shortlisted as well for the World Design award but it was the Ioniq 6 again that walked away with the trophy.

To top it off, the head of design at Hyundai and Genesis, SangYup Lee (who is Hyundai's executive VP as well) was awarded the World Car of the Year 2023 Person of the Year title. That’s a complete sweep.

And the winner of the 2023 World Car of the Year competition is..

Hyundai has scooped the World Car of the Year award for the second year in a row, with the Ioniq 6 electric sedan taking top honours in the 2023 competition.

Last year’s overall winner was the Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossover, which is built on the same E-GMP platform as this year’s winner. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 also scooped the Electric Vehicle and World Car Design of the Year category awards.

The sedan, which competes with the Tesla Model S, has a starting price of $41 600 in the US (about R750 000) and is available with a variety of battery and powertrain options, offering outputs of between 111kW and 238kW.
