GMC Hummer EV - Hummer Time is back

That YouTuber Who Crashed His GMC Hummer Called the Truck "Pathetic"

"I've taken a dip like that in my Subaru Impreza, a four-door sedan, and nothing happened. A pickup truck couldn't handle it?"

Hummer EV faces Rivian R1S EV in drag race and braking test

In an interesting new video, the guys over at The Fast Lane Truck put two of the most enticing off-road, performance SUVs to the test - the Hummer EV Pickup and the Rivian R1S. While hardly the most practical use for those two watching them participate in a 1/4 mile drag race was a real sight. Better yet the guys also did a braking distance test and an efficiency one, which would arguably matter far more to potential buyers.

In the drag race, the Hummer won by narrowest of margins thanks to its much better launch off the line. The Rivian managed to reach a higher top speed of 111mph (106 mph for the Hummer). In a 0-60 mph test, Rivian was also a tad faster with impressive 3.68 seconds, while the Hummer got to 60 mph in 4.16 seconds. Both are hugely impressive numbers for that sort of beasts, however.

It's interesting to note that there were several runs and the Hummer's performance deteriorated with each run, while the Rivian R1S was much more consistent recording pretty much identical scores.

GMC's Hummer EV SUV enters mass production, deliveries start this quarter

While the pickup version of the Hummer EV entered production in 2021, the standard SUV is only now joining it, mass production starting at the Factory Zero at Detroit. The first unit with VIN 001 just got out of the factory and the company sold it for $500,000 at an auction.

With the Hummer EV rolling off the production line, the company's VP says that the first actual deliveries will kick at the end of this quarter. Higher production volumes are expected in the second half of this year, but no specific numbers were quoted.

Bi-directional charging comes to 2024 GMC Hummer EV

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV will be finally available with bi-directional charging, commonly known as V2L or vehicle-2-load. This will be possible thanks to the new, onboard AC charger that both the pickup and SUV versions of Hummer EV are getting later this year.

The difference between the previous and the new AC charger is quite significant. The old unit was an 11.5 kW AC charger without the V2L option. The new unit comes with 19.2 kW of power and it can deliver as much as 6 kW of electricity to an external device.

That is enough to power a house with all of its equipment - fridge, aircon, cooker, TV, washing machine - the lot. That’s enough to charge another electric car, although that will take a while. The reason why V2L makes so much sense on the GMC Hummer EV is the car’s battery - the biggest battery on the market in a passenger car - a whopping 212 kWh of capacity.

GMC Hummer EV SUV review

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“It shouldn’t make any sense. But drive it for a couple of days and you realise being sensible is for other vehicles. The Hummer is about fun”

If you want the biggest, baddest SUV, the Hummer EV is pretty much your only choice right now. Having discarded all sensible limits to size, weight and performance – on and off-road – it shouldn’t make any sense. But drive it for a couple of days and you realise being sensible is for other vehicles. The Hummer is about fun.

Yet given the usual caveats – you’ll need easy and regular access to fast charging at home and away, it just won’t fit down narrow streets or into some parking garages – it’s also hugely functional, too. You’ll have a long wait to get one, even if you order one today for the thick end of $100k+. But it’s easy to see how easily it will surprise and hard to see how it would disappoint.

This GMC Hummer EV Pickup for Overlanding Will Help You Drive Even Further From a Charging Station

GMC is collaborating with Earthcruiser on an overlanding "upfit solution" for the Hummer EV Pickup.

The GMC Hummer EV Pickup has tens of thousands of preorders, many of which won’t be fulfilled until next year, though that hasn’t stopped GMC from prepping an overlanding version of the Hummer EV Pickup, in collaboration with the Oregon-based overlanding outfit Earthcruiser, GMC said Thursday. Details are a bit scarce, but that doesn’t really matter for now, given that deliveries aren’t beginning any time soon, but this does beg the question of whether there are some forms of vehicle use that are simply at odds with full electrification.

GMC’s press release, still, is nothing less than grandiloquent. “GMC and EarthCruiser Collaborate to Shape the Future of Overlanding,” they say, full stop. The future of overlanding, like all of it! It sounds very exciting until you stop and think: This thing is probably going to be even heavier than what the Hummer EV Pickup already is, and thus will probably have even less range.
