Nothing I say here is new, and I’ve seen @FiestaST alluding to this on the main thread, but damn … after test-driving a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XR (the top trim), I am fuming at Toyota.
Firstly, the good. The Corolla Cross is assembled in South Africa, which makes it have a relatively amazing price (around R530 000 for the top-spec XR Hybrid is pretty good by modern standards).
I have no problem with local assembly. I was very happy with my locally-assembled Volkswagen Polo and never felt it lacked a thing or was sub-standard in any way (I had the Highline model).
Toyota’s methodology is very different. Driving the latest Corolla Cross Hybrid locally and listing all the differences with the international model for which there are glowing reviews, you get this laundry list of places Toyota had cheapened the car locally:
- No sunroof
- No option for powered boot
- Manual foot brake (instead of electronic parking brake)
- No JBL sound system
- No 12-inch wireless Apple Car Play capable screen (we get a ten-inch wired screen)
*sighs*
Yes the car gets 5.5l/100km which is amazing, so I can only imagine Toyota at least put their international hybrid system into the car, but what other shortcuts did Toyota South Africa take?
Apparently there’s a facelift on the way which fixes the shortcomings locally, but how could they do this in the first place: https://www.carmag.co.za/news/new-models/toyota-corolla-cross-gets-significant-update/
Aaaaaaaargh!
Ok I feel better, thanks.
