My Toyota Corolla Cross rant

They dont understand if it had all those things then it wouldnt be a R500k car anymore, closer to R700K and by then it would be overlapping into the RaV4's territory.
Then why are they doing it that way in international markets? There they’re happy to have motoring journalists recommending the Corolla Cross over the RAV 4 … there the RAV 4 benefits are more interior space and a more powerful engine, but at the cost of worse fuel economy. That is exactly why international motoring journalists are raving about the Corolla Cross: it has more modern toys than the RAV 4, at a cheaper or overlapping price.

we get crap cars and crappier options put on them, not just Toyota but everywhere else,
were a 3rd world dumping ground, that its cheaper to buy a locally manufactured car somewhere else, than where it was assembled, due to the insane laws and nonsense we have here.

why is it we get shafted with Cars? I mean besides the price gouging, and besides the taxes,
its everything, the servicing, parts, repairs at a dealer, anything really when it comes to NEW cars,

Because we are a 3rd world country with a tiny budget. People need to stop fantasizing about what other markets get. We are not is the US or AUstralia, we are in SOuth AFrica.

SMH, you guys dont get it. WHat i am saying is Cross was never meant to be a high quality car, produce cheaply and sell masses.
Epah, just admit when you’re wrong please. The Corolla Cross is the SUV version of the full-fat Corolla, not the Corolla Quest. At least it is internationally. That’s the whole point: Toyota SA have bastardised their top-spec model locally, and are now going to be bringing the kit they removed locally back in as a “facelift”. Haai sies.

And who makes those decisions? South Africans like you, This negative narrative needs to end. We deserve the best equipment, even if we have to pay for it. Other car manufacturers (like Ford and Volkswagen) know how to manufacture locally and not shaft local motorists … Toyota needs to join the party. South Africans will pay for their cars, and I’d far sooner buy a top-specced Toyota Corolla across Hybrid XR with international trim over a Haval or Chery or other “plastic fantastic” cheap and nasty budget SUVs which are actually pushing R700 000 to R800 000 these days.

No you are wrong sir, The corolla cross is not the SUV version of a real Corolla, if it was then why is it cheaper than the real corolla? Shouldnt it be more expensive?

I came from a corsa lite :p

if it had electric windows I would have been happy :p
ROFL, back when I drove a Hyundai Atos I’d have been the same. These days I drive a BMW 5 Series, so you might forgive me for expecting to at least GET the modern trim which is available overseas in a Toyota dammit. It’s like McDonalds trying to sell a bit less lettuce in their Big Mac over here compared to the United States. There would be a riot.

The market makes these decisions, the local laws or lack thereof makes these decisions. There are many features that VW and ford dont implement in SA too. You just dont know about them.

800K for a Chinese crap mobile? no wonder people are broke,
actually feel sorry for those that buy New cars these days, spending that much on a car only for it to not be worth half that in 2 years time,

eish, not nice, but somebody has to keep the protection racket of the local car industry that manufactures garbage at inflated prices going,
solution? buy used, until they begin to see how they cant charge massive markups and hope to keep getting away with it.

You shouldnt be buying a new car in the first place, thats your first mistake.
So if you don't buy a new car and someone else doesn't and so on and so on. What new cars would there be?

speaking of, Shrinkflation is real, have you noticed how they make EVERYTHING smaller, and hope people dont notice,
even those big Macs they ARE much smaller than before, same with even cars, remove options here and there and hope people dont complain.

because again, 3rd world dumping ground with morons for a government, who love terrorists.

There’s not much in it: top spec Cross is R543,700 and top-spec Corolla is R570,200. And yes, I suspect that locally Toyota SA ripped spec out of the international version to protect both the Corolla sedan values and the RAV4 values, but internationally it’s a different story and many motoring journalists see the Corolla and Cross as the sedan and SUV equivalents.

Like what? I’m curious to know the other examples from Ford and VW you’re aware of. I follow international reviews as well as local reviews of all new models, and I haven’t seen anything as stark as the Toyota Corolla Cross example.

Toyota don’t even sell the “real” Yaris in South Africa.
