What is the minimum home Internet speed you would consider?
 
If you’re used to less then you need less. A family member’s household does all their 1080p streaming and work on 25Mbps and I could do the same if I was forced into that situation.

But I think 50Mbps is the minimum I would consider for my household to handle the usual situations with three devices at the same time (4K stream, TikTok, Roblox).

Not if you have 1 good braincell and schedule your downloads.
I have the cheapest line available which is a 25mb line.

I download huge games, 4k dolby movies at 30gb a piece series etc, have smart home with camera's streaming to my phone through a tunnel, home server with plex and other VMs and i run fine on 25mbps.

The only time i ever feel the slow speed is when i delay booting the gaming rig and realise i have updates, but this in itself can be solved with another VM, which come to think of it sounds like a good idea, will be building that too.
 
I was perfectly happy with 40/20 but then they disagreed and forced an "upgrade".
 
I started my FTTH journey on 20/20, then 30/30, then 50/50 and up to 60/60 with a scheme available to me through my work.

The scheme ended so I am back on 30/30 now, and finding it more than adequate for our needs (2.5 person household).

Yes, downloading games could be faster, but it's more than enough for some Netflix/Youtube and web browsing after enabling QoS on my Mikrotik router.
 
Id say gaming is probably the only reason I need 100Mbps+. It seems like every time I have an hour or 2 to get a quick game in there is a damn download.
Otherwise Id be perfectly fine on 10Mbps for typical streaming/browsing.

Like i said, have a working braincell, sonarr handles series downloads before I even know it's released, Radarr does movies. I don't plan anything on the daily, I planned once, now the system works for me.

Downlaods are scheduled for night time so streaming youtube or anything else doesn't get affected. Everything I consume is 4k if available.

Why would i want to schedule? I want to download, and it must come - NOW. Not tomorrow, not later, NOW lol.

Other than price constraints, there is no reason to have it slower.

I don't know what you're downloading? I open up the Apple TV and choose one of the many platforms what i want to watch, and I start watching.

Your missing the point, if you set it up correctly you have it downloaded before you know you want it. it's super rare for me to want to download something, it's almost always already downloaded.
 
Have a 200mbs line and I think its a waste of money. I have done speed test while the whole family(4) is streaming on different tv's and the speed is still over 190mbs.
So I am sure 50mbs will be fine, even lower.
Son also says this gaming thing, but hell he maybe download a game once a month, so he can just wait a bit longer.
And the little experience I have with downloading big games is that the server don't give you full speed for the download anyway and the writing to disk is normally slower than the actual downloading.

But i don't want to store it? I don't want a copy of it at home? I just want to watch it.

Flipside: What's invalid is your need to download GB's or TB's of what is already stored and available online for simple streaming :)
 
50mbps is fine in my experience. I would maybe go down to 40mbps. Not lower though. Streaming is heavy.
