Extreme solar storm hits South Africa

The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) space weather centre reports that a G5/Extreme geomagnetic storm hit the country at around 02:00 local time on 20 January 2026.

This comes after SANSA warned yesterday afternoon that South Africa should expect geomagnetic storm conditions to increase over the following 24 hours.

You're 6 hours too late? The world has ended already

A geomagnetic storm has to go far off the charts of "Extreme" before the fun apocalyptic stuff happens, like transformers exploding and electronics frying. I feel like the G-scale needs a bit of an overhaul.

However "meh" doesn't win the clicks.
