Sony just handed its TV business to TCL

Sony and TCL announce joint venture, Bravia TVs part of deal

Seemingly out of nowhere, TCL announced it plans to acquire Sony’s home entertainment branch, including TVs and home audio equipment. The two companies are set to enter a joint venture, with TCL controlling a commanding 51% share.

As per the press release, the TCL-led venture will “leverage Sony's high-quality picture and audio technology, brand value and operational expertise” combined with “TCL's advanced display technology, global scale advantages, industrial footprint, end-to-end cost efficiency”. Furthermore, the products will still carry Sony and Bravia branding.

The new joint venture is set to operate globally, with the binding agreement set to be finalized by the end of March. The new company is officially expected to begin its operation in April 2027. That’s all pending regulatory approval and several other partnership conditions.

Sony signs definitive agreement with TCL for Bravia TVs

Back in January, Sony and TCL announced the intention to form a joint venture in TVs and home audio equipment, of which TCL would hold a controlling 51% stake. Today, the two companies have signed a definitive agreement for this strategic partnership.

Under this legally binding agreement, Sony will establish a wholly owned subsidiary to assume its home entertainment business, and TCL will subscribe to a portion of this company's shares, with TCL holding 51% and Sony holding 49% of the shares.

The new company will succeed Sony's home entertainment business, including product development and design, manufacturing, sales and logistics, and customer service for Bravia TVs, business-to-business flat panel displays and LED displays, projectors, and home audio equipment such as home theater systems and audio components. The new company will operate this integrated business globally.

My Sony Bravia still working perfectly. KDL-32EX400. In the garage for now, until repurposing it again with a Chromecast plugged in at hdmi and usb ports. Change things up now and again indoors.

the last time i honestly was impressed with a Sony TV was in the days of CRT - after that IMHO there were too many other brands that were better at flat panels than Sony and even Panasonic and i reckon that brands like TCL and Hisense were way ahead of Sony in the current TV market so this news is not surprising in the least

Caleb Dennison reviews the new 2026 SONY Bravia 7 II TV Set...

The Bravia 7 II Might Be TOO Good -- Review - Caleb Dennison

Sony’s Bravia 7 Mark II might be one of the biggest TV surprises of 2026 so far.

This RGB MiniLED TV delivers stunning accuracy, impressive HDR brightness, strong BT.2020 performance, and that unmistakable Sony image quality, all while landing far closer to the Bravia 9 II than I expected.

But there are still a few quirks hiding under the surface.
