With well over a billion iPhones in use, Apple beats all rivals in the size of its active installed base. Roughly one in four active smartphones worldwide is an iPhone, according to new research.

This didn’t happen by accident — Apple actively supports older iPhone models for a good reason: they’re an important source of revenue.

Why Apple actively supports legacy iPhones
Keeping older iPhone models fully functional is critical for Apple because those devices continue to generate revenue long after the initial sale. Even when an iPhone is several years old, it remains tightly connected to Apple’s services ecosystem, bringing in revenue from the App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, repairs and more.

That’s why every iPhone buyer can count on at least five years of iOS upgrades — and sometimes much much longer — as well as five years or more of repairs from authorized service providers. Commitment like that clearly pays off.

Apple dominated smartphone sales in 2025 and according to a new report, it unsurprisingly had the largest installed base out of any smartphone brand worldwide. This metric takes into account the number of units that are currently in use by customers with factors like user retention, ecosystem loyalty and device longevity. According to Counterpoint Research’s Smartphone Installed Base Tracker, one in every four active smartphones used in 2025 was an iPhone.

Apple and Samsung are the only two brands in the “billion active devices club” with the two brands responsible for 44% of the global active installed base in 2025. The pair are lauded for their strong ecosystems and long-term user loyalty. Counterpoint analysts also pointed out that Apple added more net new smartphones in 2025 than the next seven leading OEMs combined.

Xiaomi was the third leading brand by active smartphone users, followed by Oppo and vivo. These three brands offer a diverse set of smartphones across all price segments and are also focusing on building up their ecosystems.

Transsion Group came in sixth place thanks to rapid growth in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) and Southeast Asia markets. Transsion’s numbers include values for Tecno, itel and Infinix devices. Huawei and Honor rounded out the top-8, with Honor now officially boasting 200+ million active devices.

so what is Apples older stuff that they still support? - its just actually expensive junk ...... because it was way overpiced when it was in the range i mean you want to compare your iphone 6 or 7 (which is still being counted making this count into the most brain dead irrelevant exercise ever undertaken in the whole world) to my phone now and see which is utter garbage ...... stop being a brain dead certifiable cretin officially belonging in a looney bin

Amazing, 75% of all phones are android. Not bad for a system that used to trail iphones in usage.
 
My R2800 samsung bought in Nov 2022, is still functional.

It does everything I need from a phone.

This debate is so 2010s.

Phone technology has matured to a point where buying a premium phone no longer makes sense.

In the early smartphone days, a cheap phone was laggy, and would freeze. You basically were forced to go premium.

Buy whatever you want. But the debate is pointless.
