Only FlySafair is interested in Starlink for in-flight Wi-Fi in South Africa

At the end of the day, regardless of the cost, people want to stay connected all the time. That is the "new world order": people can't be disconnected for even 2 hours.

I used in-flight wi-fi on Mango a decade or so back. At the right price point, this transforms the dead time of a commute into productive time.

I had starlink on a qatar flight late last year and it was an absolute game changer. Unbelievable latency and I was able to put in hours of video calls with colleagues around the world while flying. Didn't end up loosing the full day of travel time that I normally would. Do you need to stream movies? Nah, you can cache those on your phone. You can do without the news for a few hours. But calls and proper comms to colleagues on an international flight is a game changer. For domestic flights... FAR less of a game changer if the cost is high. That being said... I think this is going to become the norm, and I'm here for it.

Must be torture to the person sitting next to you for the duration of the flight while you have your meetings.

Maybe Mr. Business is doing business in business class.

Or maybe Mr. Business cheaps out in economy :(

You clearly haven't flown in a while. It's pretty noisy on a plane and you have airpods in so you aren't shouting into a mic. If you can hear me talking, I applaud you sir.

WiFi on a plane is great, but hard pass when it comes to voip. I mean seriously, ya not that important, it can wait.

No Starlink for SA..............the anc want to be able to control the internet.

I used complimentary Starlink on an Air Baltic flight. What a great experience. Compared to the trash WhatsApp only (that almost never works) wifi on Swiss Air.

What ****ing AirPods do you have? Even if you're whispering, the person next to you will hear you. You're like 20 cm apart in economy.

I'm *alllll* for having Wifi on planes. I'm *allll* for being productive while travelling. But I will be the first person to advocate for a "no calls" policy onboard.

Flying is painful enough without having the dumb af guy next to you blabbering on for hours.

It should be like on trains in japan. Absolute silence.

I can think of nothing more annoying than a pompous prick who thinks flying is an exclusive thing in 2026, blabbering on and on in a confined space for hours. If you are that important fly private jet like any other VIP.

Seriously. I haven’t had the need to make video calls with staff for the entire duration of an international flight yet, but have had to make a call or two. Plus emails, document sharing, WhatsApp, teams messaging etc. it’s a proper game changer having decent connectivity on a flight.

But seriously. People talk to each other all through a flight, you can hardly hear them either. If you have your headphones on, your not hearing anything the person next to you is saying on a teams meeting.

Yeah I'm not understanding the hate here. It's not like I am unaware of audio levels and chatting away at the top of my voice. There is so much background noise, and within reasonable levels on an international flight, it's really not an issue. Domestic safair flight... different story when you are that close together. Get a grip people.

there is some people that can not sleep on a flight(me been one of them) that if can have connectivity on a flight it will help. Not for calls as understand calls can be a pain but if could text and catch up on work it would be great
