The SABC has warned of potential legal consequences for people buying TVs online using the ID numbers of friends or family members.

South Africa's Broadcasting Act requires any person who owns a television set with built-in signal-receiving equipment to have a TV licence.

The SABC's main income was not licensing but it was advertising. They are turning to licensees because the adverts dried up because they are broadcasting shows that no one is watching or are not pulling advertisers.

Retailers should have a pair of side cutters, so if you don't want to present your TV Lic, you pay for the TV and cut it off in the shop.
