Good day,

Hope someone can help me out here.

I'm in a country at the moment, where the internet is heavily restricted. So using a VPN is the only way really to go about one's normal day.

I have an ExpressVPN subscription. Which has worked for a long time, but recently it stopped. I can connect to any of the ExpressVPN servers, world wide, but there is no throughput. Very odd.

Tried NORD, & SurfShark, same story. It connects, but no throughput.

Tried WireGuard & OpenVPN server which is installed on my home server back in SA, same story. It connects, but nothing comes down the pipe.

What other options are there to host your own VPN?

If you want to avoid a VPN all together you can setup ssh tunneling with a free vps at oracle and a program like bitvise .

You can order a virtual server anywhere in the world and setup your own vpn

Also have you tried one.one.one.one ? Cloudflare Warp.

Thanks, I'll look into this.

No, I have not tried it. Will give it a bash.

I have small terraform script if you want to standup an openvpn on any AWS region? Let me know if you want it. I dont have a VPN sub anymore as I only need one once in a while. This wont be helpful for unblocking Netflix .etc as they have blacklisted AWS range. But useful if you want to just safely browse the interwebs or buy stuff in a cheaper region.

Seems like you are in N.Korea or China.

Use TOR. You can get it pre-installed with TAILS (google it).

TOR is slow as mud. I would consider unless you were in China or similar and require extra security.

Maybe Shadowsocks or outline. Depending on where exactly you are and your threat model.

If you want self hosted, you can try amneziaWG or even run a tailscale, Zerotier or netbird tunnel between yourself and your own VPS and it should.
I had a colleague in the same situation and setting up a separate tunnel using either of these options worked flawlessly, as it turns out the country he was in, was blocking anything that looks like Wireguard or openVPN traffic.

My Russian comrades have to change VPN’s quite frequently. Hope you get it sorted.

Get AmneziaVPN and your own VPS. Its the best way. Amnezia has about 6 different protocols built into it to evade censorship. Your own VPS means they wont tie you into other vpn traffic.
