Orania recently ran entirely off-grid for more than 13 hours while Eskom was performing maintenance on the Northern Cape town's grid electricity supply.

To conduct scheduled maintenance on a substation feeding power to the town, Eskom was forced to temporarily switch off supply to Orania between 04:30 and 18:00 on 19 March 2026.
