Eskom electricity price increases push South Africans to solar power

South African solar power installers and distributors have noticed one constant in the unpredictable alternative energy industry: Eskom's electricity price increases are boosting their businesses.

Despite many years of warnings from prominent energy analysts and economists, Eskom has continued to push away paying customers with above-inflation electricity tariff increases.

You don't need to have a full solar system with eight panels if it's too expensive. You can get by with a solar geyser, solar pool pump and portable power plant to power a fridge, air fryer, a few lights and TV every evening while still remaining on Eskom prepaid.

You can save about 80% every month this way. Ideal for a single person but I don't know about a large family.

The ANC are like someone who discovers they have gold-studded seamen: If they busted a few times a week they could be filthy rich and still have a functioning sausage, but their culture of greed is foremost in their skulls - and so they jerk it all day, endlessly squeezing every last drop out until one day it collapses from lack of blood supply...shrivels into a dead, floppy appendage that can no longer bear fruit.

How much does that cost? @cavedog installed a 5kW system for R40k fully installed. Hardly uses any grid now. Heat water with normal geyser, runs normal pool pump, runs aircon washing machine etc.

Actually R40K is cheaper. My idea would cost about R60K but it doesn't require certification.

No certification, just CoC for insurance, he's in Pretoria. R40k included CoC. 5kW inverter, 5kWh battery, 3.6kWp solar.
Edit: could be 4.8kWp solar

Disturbing, but ok.

That’s not bad, Seems extremely cheap. What brand was the inverter and battery.

We a family of 4. 200L Solar Geyser(installed 2 years ago), Gas Hob and Gas Oven(installed 1 year ago), Aquagem Variable speed pool pump(1 year ago).

We use to consume 900 units per month, now we average 250 in summer and can go to 300/400 in Winter depending on geyser temperature. Cost was about 50K with installation of everything.

He’s producing about 30kWh a day from solar.

With only 3.6kw of panels installed? That would be almost 8 hours of them working full time.
In Pretoria to get 30 he'd need around 7kw of panels
Apologies, you’re right I think he has 8 panels instead of 6 after posting and doing the math when drinking my tea while having a ****. So 4.8kWp of panels. @cavedog please confirm setup. Or maybe im remembering wrong and it’s 20kWh? Still, not bad for R40k.

Nope really not bad for 40k when I had just 4.3 I could hit 20. On a good day now it's 30 beyond

I can get 30 with my 5.5kWp. Record is 37kWh but if I see 30 I consider it a good day.

30 would be them working fully for 5 hours so not to bad, the almost 2kw difference comes into play.

You have a lot of shade though, you should be more like 40 or 50 if you make full boobs?

Here in summer these panels peak at 6.1kW but array 2 on garage gets early shade after 3pm so get a funny shaped boob but still managed 40kWh.

Sun angle dropping fast, 1st april peaked at 5.3kW and managed 35kWh, yesterday peaked at 5.1kW and managed 33kWh.
