Secunda, Mpumalanga, is the only place in the world where a distinct method to transform coal into petrol and other fuels is used at a massive commercial scale.

The town itself was named after the Sasol II facility that it was built around, the second major coal-to-liquid plant in South Africa after the first facility at Sasolburg. Construction began in 1976.

Some days the air in that place was so bad if you removed the air filter from a carburetor engine you could probably drive around on an empty tank.

Sasolburg was where the first CTL plant was built in 1955 and was converted at some stage to a GTL plant with the main Sasolburg plant refining crude oil.
