Illegal scam call centres in South Africa are tied to larger cybercrime syndicates

sure quite a few people are reading this article thinking scam call centers only work in India,
not true, as a matter of fact I worked briefly for one operating in Rivonia, but not as a scammer.

didn't know what I was signing on to, covid times, and I was only there for about a week before I was let go for asking too many questions.

with the internet these days and with the easy availability of software, its incredibly easy to set up a scam call center in your own house,

actually suprised scammer payback or other scambaiting channels hasn't exposed a south african based scam call centre in SA yet.

One of these was raided by police recently here in Durban.

Ive been called by scammers pretending to be SAPS, SARS, MTN, banks, most if not all were local judging by the accents and the responses to Afrikaans, some even spoke Afrikaans .

Yes they are here.

I bet if it wasn't for Interpol they would still be "trading" but the anc wants the credit.

How do they advertise positions and what to they tell prospective staff about what the role entails?

Similarly, I always wondered, how do criminal's henchmen get hired.

"These tools include spoofing services for call centres to hide their numbers and display trusted local numbers instead, and phishing kits to process payments, mimic legitimate webpages, and verify victims."

Trust me.
We've noticed.

The legit looking webpage thing is a cluster f**k.
Some of those pages have very few indicators that they're a scam, it actually makes me scared for older folks who've started getting used to e-commerce and just won't know. Even I've come too close for comfort from using them.

Also makes it almost impossible for new guys to start their own online businesses since without initial references and confirmation that you're legit a lot of people simply won't buy from you.... and it's only a matter of time now that you're going to find bot comments etc. on review sites, forums etc. that pose as people to legitimize those sites, potentially catching out even some of us on MyBB who know better but might be in a hurry that day, it's already happening.

I feel like the internet desperately needs some kind of blockchain driven legitimacy framework for e commerce at this stage.

in my case they straight up lied saying they are a market research company,
cold calling people to find out what people think of lockdown, all complete BS,

then I got there, saw they were pretending to be a UK based company, calling UK pensioners asking them to invest 300 EUR in some scam bitcoin mining opportunity, but really it was all BS with openers and closers and everything else, operating in the middle of Rivonia and always needing fresh blood, as people eventually asked too many questions.

didnt last long, but im sure there are others out there reading this saying, yup thats me right now.

I live in the area and go past this property most days .This place always gave off dodgy vibes .Plenty of cars parked outside including some fancy bmws and an old classics.

Reading the topic, I'm interested to hear about the legal spam call centres then...... by implication then these must be such.
