South Africa can afford two more months of fuel tax cuts — Citigroup

South Africa has enough fiscal space to extend a fuel-tax cut by two months to cushion consumers from an oil shock triggered by the Iran war, Citigroup said.

The relief would likely cost the government between R10 billion and R12 billion, Gina Schoeman, the bank’s country economist, said in Johannesburg on Thursday.

The real consequences of not subsidizing the petrol prices outweighs the cost of doing so. In a country where the vast majority earn next to nothing and effectively already work just to cover the cost of getting to and from work, many will simply stop working, or move to incomes that do not rely on a substantial transport outlay.

These government clowns announce everything at the last hour. They should communicate a decision now about the fuel levy subsidy to at least alleviate some anxiety about the upcoming increase or at least give a range it will operate in, it’s not rocket science, just budget allocation.

It’s almost as if the cANCer wants people not to vote for them. Lol.
