Microsoft buying land in South Africa worth millions for local data centres

Microsoft says its investments in South Africa's cloud infrastructure space will be used to secure land for future data centre growth and to strengthen water and power readiness for its facilities.

The global tech giant's president, Brad Smith, announced in March 2025 that Microsoft would invest R5.4 billion to expand data centre capacity in South Africa and train South Africans with AI skills.

South Africa
The only place where a hyper scaler being built near your neighborhood would be an improvement as long as it sits between you and the lovely township folks.

If they can find a way to teach each of these people some basic boolean math we might not need to do the build-a-hyper-scaler thing, they can just do that human compute thing in "three body problem"

Bill Gates is buying all the land to control food production and to control fertility rates!!! He wants to drive us Africans into extinction! We are wise to his true intentions and we know the "data centres" are just a front for organ harvesting and sterilisation clinics.

Wise might be a bit of a stretch.

Yeah, the Alpha Draconis peeps have been planning this for centuries.

Yay. Data Centres gets built, there should be no complaint / rant about folk wasting water again, or the taxi washing service with hose continually running along the side of the road.
