SA Post Office highlights likely risk of entering liquidation in its Corporate Plan for 2026/27 to 2028/29

Just take it out back and put it out of it's misery, and get it done with. Probably the first thing to do it before doing that, get rid of the top 80% of management, as you really need, to run effectively, postal clerks, a postmaster per branch, and then for the depots the same, and per district a single mid manager, a single HR person, and none of the rest. Then a single provincial postmaster and HR person, and then a single central chief postmaster with 3 assistants, who handle HR as well. get rid of the rest, and have a similar setup for the post office IT services, and you might save it. Would need to have all employees posted according to qualification to do the job, nothing else, and with no political appointees aside from a minister, and a department of maximum 6 total people to do the government side.

Without that only options are to split it up, close the letter and parcel sides, and put the delivery of parcels and letters out to couriers, with them having to deliver international at no cost for under 1kg, letter or small packet, and being able to charge up to their posted rate for larger parcels, and handling any customs charges as well. The rest can be handled by all of the mass retailers, as they already have a process in place that handles this with a better service. the remaining functions, like certification, attestation and such, the retail side can have a person with the proper certification, which is given by the government, and is specific to the person, not the store, so they can easily move jobs for better pay. that, along with postbank, is all something that can be decentralised to a great degree, and use existing companies to offer them. sending mail would be something that couriers do at the cost of stamps, so that pricing is about the only function the minister of Posts and telecoms would have the authority to set the price of, and then the assorted courier networks would have to accept that price as part of the deal.
