Amazon helps with electricity prices in South Africa

The world's largest cloud computing service, Amazon Web Services (AWS), is investing significantly in new carbon-free energy projects and promoting grid modernisation in South Africa.

By spending substantially on its own generation, the tech giant is helping to mitigate against potential broader electricity tariff hikes.

I am not sure how Eskom tariffs will reduce. In fact, it will be higher as nobody wants to purchase high Eskom electricity. This will leave a surplus for Eskom to sell and therefore Eskom may have to increase its tariffs to support its huge overhead base. This may lead to also government bailouts. Perhaps, some.experts can provide more insight.

There's no such thing as a "free ride". Amazon will want to build data centers in return which will put strain on not only our electricity but water as well. As with what we see happening in the US, these centers are disasters for the community and environment. Be careful about celebrating this!

There are only two scenarios' where the price of electricity will go up, one is if Amazon does not use Eskom, the other is if Amazon does use Eskom. Either way prices will go up.
