Songs That Take You Back

So here is something from my past - i was about 4.
Put some music together for the neighbor who sometimes babysat me - and changed my nappies - that's us in the pic.
This was the music of the time my parents - and Rozanne were listening to.

Interestingly, it was at this very time the first song was etched in my memory - from then to eternity - the song: "I say a little prayer" - the 2nd song in the track.

It's a single track, but here are the songs:

Late 70's, Friday evenings. A pack of cards, a bottle of whiskey or like we'd nurse between three or four of us. Then we'd play cards through the night untill dawn with music playing in the background ...

Little would I have ever thought then that that in 2024/2025 I'd be dragged into something, advising and fighting for the friends and family of Jack Sonni who passed in 2023, something where US corporate greed tried robbing them from something precious. While I can't say too much, it really makes me reflect on humanity, good and bad, especially this time of the year where fewer of us make it to the next. The battle will continue into 2026. Fvck US greed preying on ordinary folks.

 
this morning I went to go buy some lunch at the St George's mall market and stumbled upon this, I had to take it.

I have the vinyl but never had the CD. I have this CD player (with the hifi unit and speakers) since 1994, so I had to unpack the player and find space to plug it in, but after all was done and I pressed play

I was back in 1995 with my mother shouting to put that damn thing down

brings back unusual memories.
when doing my national service i worked as a barman in one of durban's most notorious gay clubs.
it was in a small double storey building - upstairs was an alternate club.
my best friend also worked behind the bar with me and was very much into alternate music.

this track was one often played at his house.
his mother grew quite fond of it.
anyway, one night we decided to drag joyce (the mother) out with us to the two clubs.
she was having a dandy old time.
then suddenly - nellie the elephant came blasting out the sound system.

that was it !!
joyce abandoned us, abandoned her drink - and made a beeline for the dance floor - and domineered it !!
