South Africa loses R50 billion a year to an evil imposter

South Africa is losing more than R50 billion a year to illegal offshore gambling operators, according to South African Bookmakers Association CEO Sean Coleman.

Coleman said these operators offer gambling services to South Africans without holding licences from any of the country’s nine provincial gambling boards.

yeah and they are allowed to sponsor our national cricket teams.

We really need to tighten laws and enforcement around gambling. It is really preying on the most vulnerable people. And yes you can say adults should be responsible for their own choices but I bet it is the children of those adults that end up suffering.

the government could drive regulation and enforce the banks using the MCC (Merchant Category Code) and locality to completely disable cross-border gambling.

no it's not 100% effective, but if you start at 80% addressing the rest becomes a good deal easier.

Actually, banks could do this today as it's already illegal to gamble through forex transactions... so why aren't they?

Either completely ban gambling, including casinos, sports betting, the whole lot or stop trying to tell people what they can or can't do with their own money. You can't have it both ways.

They currently are... there is a mad scramble on the bank side to comply. Will probably see the impact in the near future.

This offering by SA online gamble sites spokespersons is like dredging the stagnant putrid pond scum looking for nonexistent pearls to float about.

Online gambling whether based in SA or unregulated foreign sites all have the same goal. To fleece the player for all they can.

Yes, players are primarily responsible for their own mindless stupidity. Online gambling, regulated or not, are all in it for the same goal. Tax or none, the purpose is profit at insurmountable and heavily skewered odds.

Ultimately, it is government and ruling party greed to slothfully allow the status quo. In any other astutely managed government, this practice would have been heavily regulated or cut short.

This typically included the licensed entity, the issuing provincial gambling board, and, in many cases, the operator’s licence number.

Coleman said South Africans should check the bottom of a gambling website’s landing page before placing bets or playing games.

If the website lists an offshore jurisdiction rather than a South African provincial gambling board, it is not a legal local operator.

Yes, and is the same info available on these gambling boards? Just checked - only a name (or a company number) at https://www.wcgrb.co.za/gambling-devices-2/

Sometimes the intentions may be good, but comprehension is lacking resulting in bad advice.

A 1-to-1 cross reference with the complete URL on the board's side linking up unambiguously to the gambling site and vice versa is essential, else it just becomes a menu for abuse. I'm sure some okes in the Far East are reading this with amusement.

I know this is politically incorrect and sensitive at the moment, but ...
