Steve Biko road drag racing turns deadly

Been happening there for decades, as a teen around 30 years ago I was working at a roadhouse in the area, every weekend the same.

This problem has been going on for many years and would be so easy to fix if CoT wanted too. TMPD deployment every weekend night. Speed bumps. Probably other things too.

where are the cops in these situations?
guarding a KFC?
I'm not sticking up for the cops, but often these drag racers use private property to host their events. so their hands are tied.

Private property as in a Petrol Station or Garage as we call them here in South Africa.
Garages usually have extra parking after hours, a shop with food and coffee, which makes a perfect spot for a Park Off. The owners of the garages don't mind, they're at home, relaxing or sleeping, while the shop and fuel bowsers pull in extra revenue.

While this event happened in Pretoria, Cape Town itself was plagued with these road warriors since around 2010 or thereabouts. Kids with more power on their hands than they can handle, showing off in front of friends with their pimped cars. Some with no licences and in the case of the Cape Town, most of those vehicles have been illegally modified which makes them unroadworth in terms of the law here.

The COCT spent quite a few years just getting these drag racing types under control. I saw the statistics; it was quite alarming. The sheer volume of drivers without licences was mind boggling.

In my opinion, the owners of these garages should be taken to task and forced to apply for an Events Permit and certainly an Exemption from the Noise Nuisance. It would be the only way to control these events. At least the residents would be informed as to when an event would be taking place.

I may sound like a Mother Grundy here, but we endured some 10 years or more of drag racing noise that emanated from a local garage. We have eventually got the operator to stop allowing them to meet on their properties and things have quietened down in our area. But I can assure you those kids didn't disappear, they just moved to another venue. The problem still persists.

RIP to the driver and hope the other guy came off OK.

Drag racing on public roads! What do these kids want to achieve anyways.

Not sure how it is in Pretoria, but if this were Cape Town you can be sure they'd be monitoring the schit out of the situation... probably from about 50km away, donut in hand.

I remember when the Du Noon guys were burning trucks on the off ramp... cops monitored the hell out of that.
It's the same everywhere, they are probably congregating in 6 cars at the next street.

Illegal street racers were stopped in their tracks in Bellville South, where two drivers were arrested for reckless and negligent driving during an illegal gathering of about 500 spectators. Five more motorists were arrested for driving under the influence.
In the past week, the City’s enforcement agencies made 374 arrests, recorded over 65 000 traffic transgressions, impounded 142 public transport vehicles and recovered multiple firearms and stolen vehicles.

Not clear if the dead and injured were the racing muppets or innocents but hopefully it was the former and fsckem

They should go to the race track.
I do agree but not so easy.. A lot of race tracks are privately owned so it costs money to use the track. Not only that, the tracks are governed by Motorsport SA. So to use the track you need an MSA license and insurance and marshals, first aid fire fighting etc. Non-compliance will cause these tracks to lose their good standing with MSA. Street racers will simply not pay for it and continue to race illegally.

"On Saturday, 2 May, officers in Gugulethu arrested a 2-year-old for the possession of a prohibited firearm and 14 rounds of ammunition."

Say what!?

Many people in Cape Town don't realise the problem with these Drag Racing types as its not within their communities.

I see no stats provided with regards to unlicenced drivers in this report?

The exact cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed, and authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including allegations of street racing

Uhmm the cause is pretty certain.

All I'm reading here is "we're selfish and irresponsible, F you".

These degenerates should be stomped on by the cops like the reckless schits that they are. They should be arrested and made to watch as their over-modded schitbox gets compacted into a little metal cube. Play the distorted-to-schit sound system on full blast while it's happening so the driver can hear the final screams of agony... feel the subwoofers get atomised.

There should be jail time for this sort of thing. It's so dangerous it's not even funny.
