Steve Biko road drag racing turns deadly

i wonder what speed the **** was doing before he hit brakes.

from hitting the brakes it took 2 seconds travel about 50m to impact = about 90km/h.
that distance time is under full braking.

guessing he was probably doing about 120km/h before hitting the brakes

Two young lives ruined and hopefully the innocent person who was hit is okay.

and passenger had no qualms in wilfully risking
I'm always slower to blame the passenger - they don't necessarily know what the driver plans to do. When I was in my late teens/early 20s, I got a lift with a colleague from Sun Valley to Bellville who decided to dice someone on Voertrekker Road in Parow.

Did I know before hand what would happen? No
Was I a willing participant? No
Could I have done anything to prevent it? Also no

Robot at Ben Swart street to where collision happened 200m. Lets assume you get robot green and going 60km/h legal limit it would take 12 seconds to reach the spot the collision happened. Rough count it looks like the red car did it in 6-8(generous) seconds
6 seconds 120 km/h
8 seconds 90 km/h

IMO the driver of the red car is criminally liable.

That said the crossing there is hair raising. You need to cross 3 lanes of traffic. You need to turn a bit into oncoming traffic to cross. Insanity.

Best is to turn right and then play frogger to the other side going with the traffic flow and take the next street. Takes longer but at least safer. Even longer solution is to go south on Johan Heyns the right into Ben Swart which has a robot. Still not really safe as the muppets race from further and disregard red lights.

I drove there a lot and always hated it was young and dumb, dangerous at best of times. After a while knew pretoria a bit better and avoided that area even if it took 10mins longer. Some of my gray hair was earned on that road.
I actively avoid any crossing roads without a traffic light on Voortrekker exactly because of this. Almost had the same type of accident as this.

Also, I think it's 4 lanes, not 3 - four lanes all the way down to the fuel station and KFC, forgot the street name there.

Paar serious brakpan/springs/pretoria wes specials in die thread. Lol.

And people said AI will be the end of us...

Stupid and bottom of the barrel more likely.

A Pretoria mother has paid tribute to her 25-year-old son, Phillip, who died following a crash at the intersection of Steve Biko Road and Booysen Street on Sunday, May 3.

Phillip’s mother, Frieda, described him as a passionate young man with a big heart who touched many lives.

Ja for sure did the **** touch the hearts of the KWID occupants.

He wasn't driving

Passenger and a dwarf. Though they spinning it as the Kwids fault
He looks like he was a good oke, as @Progenix Oj101 mentioned passengers often aren't always aware what they are getting themselves into with these kinds of things. Weird that they are trying to frame it as the Kwid drivers fault considering the guys mother even admits they were involved in illegal street racing.

Maybe Steke Biko Rd is overdue for a few speed bumps or maybe cops being present every Sunday evening would help, maybe, possibly?

They're were going to "clamp down" on illegal racing on the same road in 2011 after an accident involving an uno and a 350z.

Before that in 2009
