Afrihost Vodacom Fixed 5G thread

To anyone that is contemplating getting this, do not, absolute **** service from Afrihost with the brain damaged courier selection that cannot deliver a piece of plastic. Thanks Afrihost, will definitely be switching to something else even if I have to pay double

3 days out on delivery for a piece of plastic, not to mention that the courier refused collection from afrihost and only picked it up 2 days later, "client not present at physical address" is just another excuse for these minimum wage workers to be lazy

My God.. You haven't even received this product yet.. Then you still have to actually use it. This is purgatory.

I've used the MTN which was pretty fair, the only thing that annoyed me was the 4mbps throttle, now I see this Vodacom package offers 8mbps, Vodacom in the area works fine for me on a normal sim, but I guess we will find out.

I have also noticed that turning off 5G on the router and sticking to 4G helps with the latency issues, I guess it also depends what area you are in

I'm finally cancelling this bull@#$% product next month. Slight breeze, internet fails. My internet breakout point takes a vacation before heading to Europe. DNS constantly fails with packet loss averaging around 30%. Since the days of Telkom 384kbps 2G cap, this is the worst internet experience I've ever had.

I wish you the best of luck my friend.

 i don't really have any other option at this point tbh, I have tried all the mobile providers and at the end of the day they all turn out to be a pile of ****, but which one is best smelling

The ZTE G5TS doesn't allow you to switch to 4G only.

I'm literally using a MTN pre paid sim to comment atm since of course the Vodacom internet doesn't work. 🤣

i have the ZTE MC801A that I rightfully claimed from Supersonic after rear ending me in the billing department, that router allows me to lock 4G and do a cell lock, that also helped, I've noticed that it bounces around different cells on the same tower causing packet loss and latency spikes

Do you mind posting a cell lock screenshot?

I need a new router for 5G might need to get this one

You need to run this script in the browser console to unlock all the settings - https://gist.github.com/tpoechtrager/766140c49a711a2177820ea42556de3c

I don't have the router plugged in as I'm still waiting for the simcard, but you just enter the PCI,EARFCN of the tower, and it will lock to only that tower, but you have to know that when you set a lock, and that tower goes down, it will not bounce back to another one unless you reset the router.

You can find it on https://www.cellmapper.net/ but I have also noticed that is outdated, you will need to check the PCI,EARFCN when you are connected to the appropriate tower, then set it. I allows you do to many things, including specifying bands

Thanks for the info this looks good. Router has no connector spots for external antenna?

This should be good thanks so much, Now to fork out the money for the antenna XD

the built in antenna on the router is pretty solid, you might just experience terrible SINR, but i also live in a heavily congested area where everyone relies on mobile data

This could be a firmware restriction from Afrihost? Not sure.
You can "hack" it by disabling band N41 and N78 (the main 5G bands) under developer options. Then it will essentially just run 4G.
